The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), in collaboration with the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), has awarded small grants to 15 youth-led organizations across Africa. This initiative aims to scale up youth-driven climate adaptation training at national and community levels, strengthening the continent’s capacity to tackle climate change through local innovation and leadership. Expanding the Reach of Youth Climate Leadership Building on the success of the Youth Academy on Adaptation and Leadership, held in Kenya in September 2025, the new grant program empowers young Africans to transform training into tangible climate action. Each of the selected youth-led organizations will receive a EUR 2,000 grant to conduct localized training programs using the GCA Adaptation Training Toolkit. These tailored programs will replicate and adapt the Youth Academy’s methodologies to regional contexts, equipping participants with essential skills in climate adaptation planning, project design, and community resilience building. The initiative highlights GCA’s strategic approach—bridging global expertise with local realities to build inclusive, climate-resilient communities. From Training to Transformation The Youth Academy on Adaptation and Leadership brought together young leaders from 50 countries earlier in 2025, fostering a network of emerging change-makers committed to climate resilience. Through this follow-up phase, GCA and MMUST seek to translate knowledge into localized action, enabling youth organizations to implement innovative adaptation solutions within their own communities. Professor Patrick V. Verkooijen, President and CEO of GCA and Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, emphasized the importance of youth-driven innovation: “Young people are already leading innovation and resilience across Africa. By equipping them with practical tools and resources, we are enabling them to design and implement locally led adaptation projects that strengthen climate resilience where it is needed most.” This vision underscores GCA’s belief that sustainable adaptation depends on local ownership and youth participation. Strengthening Youth Capacity Across the Continent The small grant initiative targets organizations within the African Youth Adaptation Network (YAN), a key GCA partner promoting youth engagement in adaptation policy and practice. The program’s central goal is to build institutional and technical capacity among youth organizations, enabling them to develop high-quality project proposals, access climate finance, and scale up locally led adaptation initiatives. The 15 selected countries—Egypt, Tunisia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, Benin, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—represent all major regions of Africa. Through these partnerships, the initiative will foster cross-border collaboration and the exchange of innovative adaptation strategies suited to different environmental and social contexts. Driving the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Agenda This program aligns with GCA’s broader mission under the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), a continental partnership launched to fast-track adaptation action across Africa. The AAAP seeks to integrate adaptation into development planning, strengthen institutional frameworks, and expand access to climate finance. Through the youth small grants initiative, GCA reaffirms its commitment to empowering Africa’s next generation of climate leaders, ensuring that training evolves into action, and that action leads to resilience. By investing directly in young people and their organizations, GCA is creating a pipeline of skilled professionals capable of driving Africa’s adaptation agenda at every level—from community projects to national policies. About the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) Founded in 2018, the Global Center on Adaptation is an international organization dedicated to promoting adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Its mission is to climate-proof global development by catalyzing policy reform and influencing investments made by international financial institutions, governments, and the private sector. GCA operates through a unique dual-headquarters model—with offices in Rotterdam (Global North) and Nairobi (Global South)—symbolizing its commitment to equitable collaboration between regions. The organization’s regional hubs in Abidjan, Dhaka, and Beijing further enable context-specific, locally informed adaptation solutions. By leveraging this global network, GCA ensures a continuous, two-way exchange of knowledge and best practices, driving inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth worldwide. About Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) MMUST, one of Kenya’s leading public universities, has a strong focus on science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development. Through its collaboration with GCA, MMUST plays a pivotal role in nurturing young leaders in climate adaptation, research, and applied solutions. The partnership reflects a shared vision: empowering African youth to take charge of their environmental future through education, capacity building, and innovation. A Continental Movement for Climate Resilience This youth-led adaptation initiative is more than a grant program—it represents a growing continental movement for climate resilience, powered by Africa’s most dynamic resource: its youth. By merging education, financing, and mentorship, GCA and MMUST are creating pathways for young Africans to shape a sustainable future, one community at a time.
