About Girl Effect Girl Effect is an international non-profit organization dedicated to creating media that girls trust, want, and need. Its content—from chatbots and chat shows to TV dramas and tech platforms—supports adolescent girls across Africa and Asia in making informed decisions about their health, education, relationships, and livelihoods. By offering safe spaces for learning, the organization empowers girls to challenge societal norms and envision new possibilities for their lives. With a reach of over 50 million, Girl Effect leverages technology to scale impact, enabling girls to take control of their bodies, health, learning, and careers. When a girl transforms her choices, she sparks a ripple effect that influences families, communities, and society. Background Over the past five years, Girl Effect has pioneered digital products that use conversational technologies to connect girls with vital health information. In South Africa, the chatbot Big Sis has integrated AI and generative AI (GenAI) capabilities to provide information on sensitive topics efficiently and safely. The organization is now launching Mental Health Anytime Anywhere, a project that moves beyond generative AI to predictive, agentic systems designed to anticipate users’ readiness to act and deliver personalized guidance for real behavioral change. Key components include: Mental Health Agent: Offers single-session therapy and support, developed with clinical psychologists. SBCC Agent: A Social and Behavior Change Communication agent using reasoning large language models (LLMs) to guide users through behavioral barriers, nudging them toward positive health outcomes, such as service uptake. Scope of Work The GenAI Narrative, Content & Evaluation Specialist will bridge creative content, psychological safety, and technical execution. Responsibilities include ensuring that AI agents communicate in a culturally sensitive voice, adhere to safety protocols, and guide users through complex health journeys. Key responsibilities: Data & Evaluation Curation: Curate and refine datasets, generate and label sentences, and create “gold standard” benchmarks. Prompt Engineering: Design system prompts to control agent tone, persona, and safety, translating program goals into empathetic, actionable instructions. Quality Assurance & System Analysis: Trace model reasoning, identify failure modes, monitor unexpected queries, and refine chatbot performance. Testing, Evaluation & Documentation: Assess chatbot responses for tone, empathy, and cultural relevance while documenting findings to inform iterations. Requirements Native or near-native fluency in English with deep familiarity with South African slang and language patterns. Knowledge of other South African languages is advantageous. Minimum 2–3 years of experience in content creation, writing, or linguistics. Strong communication and writing skills to simplify complex concepts for adolescent girls. Experience with Excel and AI/ML datasets; familiarity with LangSmith or similar LLM evaluation tools is a plus. Passion for youth development and health-related content, particularly in sexual and reproductive health or economic empowerment. Awareness of safeguarding and digital safety protocols. Commitment and Location Time Commitment: 1.5 days per week (12 hours) from February 2026 to June 2026. Location: Remote, with the ability to collaborate synchronously and asynchronously with teams in the UK, USA, Sub-Saharan Africa, and India. Deliverables Evaluation Reports: Detailed analyses of model performance against safety and behavioral goals. Prompts for Agentic Systems: Refined system prompts and dialogue frameworks for behavioral and mental health guidance. Curated Datasets: Cleaned, labeled datasets for model fine-tuning or few-shot prompting. Reporting will be to Girl Effect’s Data Scientist and collaboration with the Senior Director of Technology and an external ML agency. Proposal Submission Proposals should be a maximum of five pages, including: Cover letter detailing suitability for the consultancy. CV/credentials showcasing relevant experience. References for at least three similar projects. Breakdown of costs in ZAR, specifying daily or hourly rates and applicable taxes. Proposals must demonstrate understanding of the TOR and evaluation criteria. Validity is 90 days from the bid closure date. Evaluation Criteria Technical Evaluation (60%) GenAI or AI-assisted content creation experience – 15% Cover letter understanding of TOR – 10% Relevant prior work – 10% Geographical experience in South Africa – 10% Contactable references – 10% Experience and qualifications – 15% Financial Evaluation (30%) Value for money and budget clarity All materials produced remain the property of Girl Effect.
