Contract Type: Fixed-term (24 months), subject to funding availabilityLocation: Nairobi (Kenya), Kampala (Uganda), or Abuja (Nigeria)Hybrid Working: Yes About the Role The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking an experienced and strategic Programme Lead, Consumer Demand to lead and strengthen its Consumer Demand Creation programme. This senior role provides strategic, technical, and managerial leadership to ensure that GAIN’s market-based demand creation approaches effectively increase consumers’ motivation and ability to choose healthier and more sustainable foods. The Programme Lead will serve as GAIN’s internal and external authority on consumer demand creation, shaping the organisation’s distinctive approach and providing clarity on when and how to deploy different consumer-centric interventions, including demand creation, social and behaviour change communication (SBCC), and nutrition education. The role involves overseeing multi-country initiatives, supporting programme teams, building strategic partnerships, and representing GAIN within global policy and practitioner forums. Overall, the position ensures that GAIN’s consumer demand portfolio delivers high-quality, evidence-based, and impactful outcomes aligned with the organisation’s mission to transform food systems. Key Responsibilities Programmatic and Strategic Leadership The Programme Lead will: Oversee the Demand Generation Programme, working closely with programme and technical leads to leverage specialist expertise, tools, and resources Review, refresh, and further develop GAIN’s consumer demand creation strategy Provide strategic clarity across the organisation on: The distinct purposes of demand creation, SBCC, and nutrition education Appropriate channels and target audiences for each approach Advance market-based demand creation strategies by: Integrating behavioural science, emotional engagement, and marketing principles Testing, refining, and documenting innovative approaches Drive internal and external visibility of GAIN’s work through: Dissemination of project findings and learning Development of communications assets, working papers, and publications Represent GAIN at: Government and donor meetings Technical working groups Regional and global conferences and seminars Collaborate with the Policy and Advocacy team to shape and deliver a global influencing agenda Build and strengthen strategic partnerships and contribute to global discourse on demand generation best practice Technical Project Design and Delivery Support The role will provide technical leadership across the project lifecycle by: Offering collaborative advice and technical guidance during: Project design Implementation Adaptation of demand-focused interventions Supporting knowledge and learning (KL) processes by: Defining learning agendas Contributing to monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) frameworks Supporting development of theories of change, results frameworks, and monitoring tools Coordinating the development of knowledge products that advance thinking on market-based demand creation for nutritious foods Positioning GAIN as a thought leader in consumer demand through: Contributions to conferences and practitioner platforms Strategic convenings and learning events Reviewing relevant projects across countries to: Facilitate cross-country learning Integrate external insights Mobilise technical support and resolve implementation challenges Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation The Programme Lead will contribute to GAIN’s sustainability and growth by: Identifying and developing resource mobilisation opportunities Leading proposal development for consumer demand-related initiatives Providing technical input and guidance to the Development Office Collaborating with Programme Managers and technical leads to design competitive funding proposals Team and People Management Key people management responsibilities include: Managing and mentoring members of the Demand Generation team Supervising interns and consultants as required Supporting recruitment of key technical and programme staff Participating in organisational development initiatives aimed at strengthening GAIN’s effectiveness Collaborating across multi-site and multi-functional teams to foster coherence and shared learning Salary and Benefits The gross annual salary range for this role is location-dependent: Kenya: KES 6,236,928 – KES 7,127,928 Uganda: UGX 126,529,380 – UGX 144,542,460 Nigeria: NGN 22,211,484 – NGN 25,364,388 Additional benefits include: 37 days of leave per year (annual leave, public holidays, and office closure days) Competitive pension scheme Comprehensive insurance cover, including health, travel, and life assurance Flexible and hybrid working arrangements Wellbeing initiatives, including wellbeing days, mindfulness coaching, and confidential counselling Strong commitment to professional development through training, secondments, and internal career progression About GAIN GAIN is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations in 2002 to address malnutrition worldwide.
