Graduate students working in biodiversity research have an exciting opportunity to gain global recognition through the 2026 Graduate Researchers Award. Organized by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, this prestigious annual award celebrates innovative research that uses biodiversity data to drive scientific discovery and conservation efforts. About the GBIF Graduate Researchers Award The GBIF Graduate Researchers Award is designed to highlight outstanding master’s and PhD research that relies on GBIF-mediated biodiversity data. The programme recognizes innovation in fields such as taxonomy, ecology, and biogeography—key areas within biodiversity informatics. For 2026, the award will provide two prizes of €5,000 each, supporting early-career researchers who demonstrate excellence in using data to address global biodiversity challenges. Winners will be officially announced ahead of the GBIF Governing Board meeting scheduled to take place in Oslo in September 2026. Who Can Apply? Eligibility for the award is limited to graduate students who meet the following criteria: Currently enrolled in a master’s or PhD programme Citizens of a GBIF participant country, or Enrolled at an institution based in a GBIF participant country Importantly, students cannot apply directly. Instead, they must be nominated by a national GBIF node manager or head of delegation. Each participating country can nominate up to two candidates. Application and Nomination Process Students interested in the award must first contact their national GBIF participant office or node manager. Each country manages its own internal selection process and deadlines, which may vary. The final deadline for national nominations to be submitted to GBIF is 29 May 2026. However, applicants should be aware that country-level deadlines may be earlier. What to Include in Your Application Candidates must prepare a comprehensive nomination package in English, which includes: A 200-word research summary A detailed project description (up to five pages) covering: Research objectives and innovation Use of GBIF data Methodology and research plan Contribution to biodiversity conservation A current CV A letter from a faculty supervisor confirming student status One to three letters of support from researchers in relevant fields Applicants are also encouraged to outline how their research data will be shared through the GBIF network. Selection Criteria An expert jury coordinated by the GBIF Science Committee will evaluate nominations based on: Originality and innovation Effective use of GBIF-mediated data Impact on biodiversity informatics and conservation Even if a project is not fully completed, it can still be submitted, provided it demonstrates strong potential and scientific value. Why This Award Matters The GBIF Graduate Researchers Award is more than just a financial prize—it is a global platform for emerging scientists. Winning or even being nominated can significantly boost your academic profile, open doors to collaborations, and enhance future funding opportunities. Participants also contribute to the broader mission of GBIF: improving access to biodiversity data and supporting global conservation efforts. Important Dates to Remember Country-level deadlines: Vary by nation (many fall between early and mid-May 2026) Final nomination deadline: 29 May 2026 Award announcement: Before September 2026 Final Thoughts If your research involves biodiversity data and contributes to scientific understanding or conservation, this award is well worth pursuing.
