The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is seeking an experienced Project Officer to lead the implementation of the IKI-funded SYMBIOTIC project in Kenya and Ethiopia. This role is central to advancing biodiversity mainstreaming across economic sectors and supporting national and regional efforts to align development planning with biodiversity conservation and sustainable finance. The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and reports to the Manager, Africa Strategy and Partnerships & Head of Kenya Office. A valid Kenya work permit is required. Organisational Background GGGI is a treaty-based, intergovernmental organisation dedicated to supporting strong, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. Through policy advisory services, capacity building, and project implementation, GGGI works with governments and partners to embed green growth principles into national development pathways. In Kenya and Ethiopia, GGGI supports biodiversity conservation and the development of a sustainable bioeconomy, aligned with: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) The SYMBIOTIC project forms part of a broader multi-country initiative that positions biodiversity as a driver of sustainable economic development. In Kenya and Ethiopia, the project focuses on: Private sector engagement Nature-positive and biodiversity finance Integration of biodiversity into economic planning, investment, and business practices Position Summary The Project Officer will lead the delivery of the SYMBIOTIC project in Kenya and Ethiopia, overseeing the full project management cycle. The role focuses on mainstreaming biodiversity into economic planning, financial systems, and private sector decision-making, while supporting the effective implementation of NBSAPs. The position requires strong leadership in policy analysis, stakeholder coordination, capacity building, monitoring and reporting, and financial oversight, as well as close collaboration with national partners, including NABU Ethiopia and Nature Kenya. Key Responsibilities Project Coordination and Delivery Lead implementation of project activities across Kenya and Ethiopia Coordinate multiple workstreams to ensure timely and high-quality delivery Ensure compliance with project agreements, donor requirements, and GGGI standards Policy, Finance, and Technical Leadership Oversee policy and financial gap analyses related to biodiversity, including: Subsidies and incentives Economic drivers impacting biodiversity Coordinate the application of economic and natural capital accounting tools, such as SEEA, to inform: Policy reform Investment decisions NBSAP implementation Support integration of biodiversity and bioeconomy considerations into: National development plans Sectoral policies and legislation Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement Design and oversee capacity-building programmes for: Government institutions Private sector actors Project partners Engage stakeholders across public, private, and civil society sectors Promote biodiversity-positive and bioeconomy value chains Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting Lead project monitoring, evaluation, and learning processes Track progress toward biodiversity targets and project outcomes Prepare high-quality reports for donors and internal stakeholders Engagement and Partnerships The Project Officer will: Develop spin-off initiatives and resource mobilisation opportunities Maintain proactive communication with: Government counterparts in Kenya and Ethiopia Donors and development partners Represent GGGI in the Project Steering Committee Foster strategic partnerships to support project expansion and sustainability Delivery and Team Leadership Key delivery responsibilities include: Ensuring project execution aligns with agreed objectives and timelines Providing technical leadership to staff and consultants Managing teams effectively while promoting staff wellbeing Mainstreaming safeguards, poverty reduction, and social inclusion across all outputs Ensuring alignment with: National legal frameworks Agenda 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) NBSAPs Qualifications and Experience Required Qualifications Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as: Forestry Environmental Economics or Finance Natural Resource Management Biodiversity Conservation Agroforestry Sustainable or Climate Finance At least seven years of relevant experience leading projects in developing countries related to: Biodiversity conservation and restoration Biodiversity or nature-positive finance Forest landscape restoration or agroforestry Technical and Professional Experience Experience with biodiversity mainstreaming and NBSAPs Strong stakeholder engagement skills across government, private sector, and civil society Familiarity with project management, reporting, and compliance processes Knowledge of safeguards, gender, and social inclusion integration Fluency in English (Swahili or Amharic is an advantage) Core Competencies The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Strategic and analytical thinking Strong organisational and multitasking skills Attention to detail and commitment to quality Ability to work independently and collaboratively Experience managing international and local consultants Strong communication, problem-solving, and stress management skills Alignment with GGGI’s mission, values, and organisational culture Contract Details Location: Nairobi, Kenya Contract Type: Staff Grade: X8 End Date: 31 January 2031 Deadline: 7 February 2026 Job Reference: RP26-16 VISIT OFFICIAL WEBSITE TO APPLY For more opportunities such as these please follow us on Facebook, Instagram , WhatsApp, Twitter, LinkedIn and Telegram Disclaimer: Global South Opportunities (GSO) is not the seeking organization.
