Application Deadline
November 20, 2026
Early- and mid-career researchers in sub-Saharan Africa have an opportunity to pursue fully funded Master’s studies in malaria research through the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology and Biostatistics Network for Enhancing Talent in Sub-Saharan Africa (MAGNETS) fellowship programme. Funded by the European Union through Global Health EDCTP3, the MAGNETS initiative is offering 10 fully funded, two-year Master’s fellowships across four African research institutions. Applications are currently open for three positions hosted by the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM) in Mozambique. The programme aims to strengthen research capacity in malaria genomic epidemiology and biostatistics while preparing the next generation of African researchers to address malaria and other infectious diseases. About the MAGNETS Fellowship Programme MAGNETS is an international research capacity-building initiative involving six institutions: CISM in Mozambique, the Infectious Disease Research Collaboration (IDRC) in Uganda, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) through Wits Health Consortium in South Africa, the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Ethiopia, the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in Spain, and the University of California, San Francisco, in the United States. The fellowship provides structured academic training, mentorship and practical research experience within ongoing malaria research projects. Although the programme offers 10 fellowships across four African host institutions, the application round currently open is specifically for CISM in Mozambique. The other advertised institutional application rounds are closed. What the Fully Funded Fellowship Covers Successful candidates will receive financial and academic support throughout their fellowship, including: Tuition fees: Full coverage of approved Master’s programmes. Monthly stipend: A living allowance throughout the fellowship. Computing resources: A personal laptop and access to high-performance computing facilities. Training opportunities: Workshops, analytical boot camps and participation in one regional conference. Mentorship: Structured guidance from national and international malaria experts. Career development: An individual development plan and cohort-wide training activities. The fellowship is designed to help researchers develop the technical skills needed to contribute to malaria research, epidemiological analysis and evidence-based public health interventions. Available Master’s Programmes Applicants applying through CISM in Mozambique can explore the following Master’s programmes: 1. MSc in Public Health — Universidade Eduardo Mondlane This programme offers a pathway for candidates interested in public health research and the application of epidemiological evidence to infectious disease prevention and control. 2. MSc in Applied Statistics — Universidade Eduardo Mondlane This option is suitable for candidates interested in statistical methods, quantitative research and data analysis relevant to malaria research. 3. Master’s in Applied Clinical Research, Global Health Track — Universitat de Barcelona This programme provides an opportunity to pursue clinical research training through the Global Health track, with links to the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Applicants must independently apply for and secure admission to an eligible Master’s programme. Receiving a MAGNETS fellowship does not automatically guarantee university admission. Who Can Apply? The MAGNETS fellowships are intended for early- and mid-career researchers working in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly those connected to institutions involved in malaria or infectious disease research. Applicants should meet the following requirements: Academic background: A background in biological sciences, medicine, statistics, public health, economics or a related discipline. Institutional affiliation: Work at an institution involved in malaria or infectious disease research in sub-Saharan Africa. Master’s admission: Meet the admission requirements of an eligible Master’s programme. Post-fellowship employment: Commit to working in a relevant role in sub-Saharan Africa for at least two years after completing the fellowship. Language proficiency: Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the language of instruction, English or Portuguese. Complete application: Submit all required documents before the application deadline. Previous experience in genomics is not required. The programme explicitly encourages applications from women and underrepresented groups, and career gaps will not be penalised. Required Application Documents Applicants should prepare the following documents: A statement of interest of no more than 1,000 words. A curriculum vitae of no more than four pages. Two letters of recommendation. Academic transcripts. A post-fellowship employment guarantee letter. Candidates should consult the official application guidelines for detailed instructions, research themes, supervisor information, eligible programmes and any additional requirements. How to Apply for the MAGNETS Fellowship Interested applicants should review the official MAGNETS application guidelines, identify an eligible Master’s programme and confirm that they meet both the fellowship and university admission requirements. Applications are assessed through a four-stage process: eligibility screening, merit review and shortlisting, interviews, and final selection. Candidates should pay particular attention to the separate university admission process, as the fellowship award is conditional on securing admission to the intended Master’s programme. Application deadline: 30 October 2026 at 23:59 Central Africa Time (CAT). Applications are currently open for the CISM-hosted fellowships in Mozambique. Candidates should use the official MAGNETS website to access the application portal and complete guidelines. Apply here: https://magnets-africa.org/ Why This Opportunity Matters Malaria remains a major public health challenge across sub-Saharan Africa. Strengthening local expertise in genomic epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical research can help researchers investigate transmission patterns, analyse health data and contribute to improved disease surveillance and control strategies. Through tuition support, living allowances, computing resources and mentorship, MAGNETS offers eligible researchers an opportunity to advance their academic training while building expertise relevant to the region’s research priorities. Prospective applicants should review the official requirements carefully and submit their applications before the deadline.
