About GLAN The Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) is a unique, non-profit organisation that works in close partnership with affected communities to pursue innovative legal actions across borders. GLAN challenges states, corporations, and other powerful actors implicated in systemic injustice, using the law as a tool to confront impunity and shift power. GLAN’s vision is justice across borders. The organisation operates internationally, supporting communities whose rights have been violated and who are often excluded from traditional pathways to accountability. GLAN’s Areas of Focus GLAN’s legal work spans interconnected areas of global injustice, including: Environment and climate change Accountability for atrocity crimes Abuses in global value chains Through strategic litigation, advocacy, and coalition-building, GLAN seeks not only legal victories but also structural change. Key Achievements GLAN has established itself as a leader in transnational legal action. Notable outcomes include: Holding 32 European countries to account in the world’s largest climate case Halting UK weapons exports for use in Gaza Establishing a legal precedent to block imports of goods produced through forced labour Supporting Barbudan communities resisting land grabs by luxury developers These successes reflect GLAN’s commitment to challenging entrenched systems of power and building a global movement for accountability. The Opportunity: Joining GLAN’s Board of Trustees GLAN currently has a Board of seven dedicated and knowledgeable Trustees and is seeking to appoint up to three additional Trustees. This is an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the governance and strategic direction of a growing organisation operating in a complex and high-impact legal environment. Trustees are central to ensuring that GLAN remains true to its mission, values, and legal responsibilities while navigating an increasingly challenging global context. Role and Responsibilities As a Trustee, individuals will: Contribute to the strategic leadership and governance of the organisation Ensure GLAN fulfils its legal, financial, and regulatory responsibilities Support oversight of organisational risk, sustainability, and impact Bring personal skills, lived experience, and professional expertise to strengthen board decision-making Uphold GLAN’s values and contribute to a culture of accountability, reflection, and collective power Who GLAN Is Seeking GLAN is particularly keen to hear from candidates who can strengthen the Board’s diversity, perspective, and expertise. Priority areas include: Individuals with lived experience of the harms GLAN seeks to address Black and Brown candidates, particularly those with strong connections to the Global South or Global Majority Experience in movement building and strengthening civil society alliances Expertise in impact measurement, fundraising, or marketing Candidates able to support GLAN in navigating: External political and legal risks A challenging fundraising and operating environment Individuals who share GLAN’s values and demonstrate a commitment to: Decolonial practice Anti-racism Power-sharing and worker voice Trustees are also expected to support GLAN’s ambition to foster an environment in which staff have a strong collective voice in matters affecting their work and wellbeing. Essential and Desirable Criteria Essential Experience and Skills At least three years’ experience serving on a charity board or comparable governing body Understanding of charity governance and trustee responsibilities under UK law Ability to assess complex issues and make balanced, strategic decisions Awareness of reputational and operational risks in the NGO or human rights sector Strong collaborative skills and ability to contribute effectively within a diverse board Desirable Experience and Knowledge Qualifications or professional expertise in: Impact measurement Fundraising Marketing Knowledge of: International human rights frameworks and advocacy Charity regulation and safeguarding obligations Budgets, financial statements, and risk management Time Commitment and Practical Arrangements Trustee meetings are held quarterly Meetings are preferably held in person in London, but: Applications from candidates based in the Global South are strongly welcomed Online participation is fully supported Trustees must be able to commit sufficient time to meetings and governance responsibilities GLAN’s Core Values Trustees are expected to uphold and model GLAN’s values: Decolonial: Commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice Collective Power: Belief in shared leadership and movement-building Responsive: Adaptability in a rapidly changing global context Steadfast: Patience and persistence in pursuit of long-term change Self-Reflective: Ongoing examination of power, privilege, and impact Find Out More and Apply Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend an online information session to learn more about GLAN and the Trustee role: Date: 12 January 2026 Time: 14:00 UTC To register: Email info@glanlaw.org to receive the joining link Applications are now open.
