Crisis Action opens remote South Africa role for communications professional supporting global civilian protection efforts An international organisation working to protect civilians affected by conflict has announced an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to strengthen its global brand, fundraising communications, and advocacy storytelling. Crisis Action is recruiting a Communication Strategist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, to support its Development team and help communicate the organisation’s impact to donors, partners, and global audiences. The full-time remote position is designed for a creative and strategic communications specialist who can combine compelling storytelling with fundraising expertise to advance humanitarian action. Role combines communications strategy, brand leadership and fundraising Crisis Action works by bringing together NGOs and wider networks of allies, including faith groups, business leaders, and creative communities, to build collective responses that protect civilians from conflict. The Communication Strategist will play a central role in shaping how the organisation communicates its mission, impact, and approach. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will work at the intersection of communications and fundraising, developing content that builds trust, strengthens the organisation’s profile, and inspires donor support. Key priorities for the role include: Strengthening Crisis Action’s global brand identity Developing donor-focused communications Creating compelling impact stories Supporting fundraising campaigns and engagement strategies Improving digital communications and audience outreach Communications Strategist to lead brand storytelling and messaging The successful applicant will oversee the implementation and evolution of Crisis Action’s brand strategy across multiple platforms. Responsibilities will include: Managing the organisation’s visual and narrative identity Developing brand guidelines, storytelling frameworks, and tone-of-voice standards Ensuring consistency across external communications Translating Crisis Action’s coalition model into clear and engaging narratives Creating communications that demonstrate the organisation’s impact The role requires someone who can transform complex humanitarian work into accessible stories that connect with different audiences. Position supports fundraising and donor engagement efforts A major focus of the role will be creating communications that help mobilise resources for Crisis Action’s work. The Communication Strategist will collaborate with fundraising colleagues and organisational leadership to produce: Donor proposals and pitch materials Fundraising appeals Impact reports Newsletters Digital fundraising campaigns Donor event messaging and briefing materials The successful candidate will use storytelling to highlight the human impact of Crisis Action’s work and strengthen relationships with supporters. Digital communications and audience engagement responsibilities The role will also involve managing and improving the organisation’s online presence. Key digital responsibilities include: Overseeing website content and tone Supporting digital communications strategies Analysing audience engagement data Improving communications performance through evidence-based approaches Developing content strategies for different audiences The Communication Strategist will work closely with global colleagues to identify emerging stories and insights from Crisis Action’s programmes. Candidates need strong communications and nonprofit experience Crisis Action is seeking applicants with significant experience in communications, branding, fundraising, or marketing. Essential qualifications and experience include: At least six years of professional experience in communications, brand management, fundraising, or marketing Experience developing brand strategies and storytelling for mission-driven organisations Exceptional writing and editing skills Experience managing fundraising campaigns and donor communications Understanding of digital communications, audience segmentation, and campaign strategy Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-moving environment Experience working collaboratively across cultures and international teams Candidates should also demonstrate strong alignment with Crisis Action’s mission and commitment to collective action. Human rights and humanitarian experience considered an advantage While not essential, applicants with experience in humanitarian, human rights, peacebuilding, or advocacy sectors will be strongly considered. Additional desirable experience includes: Working with foundations, major donors, or institutional funders Supporting global organisations or multicultural teams Communicating complex international issues to diverse audiences Benefits include competitive salary and flexible remote working The position offers a salary starting from USD 45,000 per year, alongside a range of benefits. Benefits include: 25 days of annual leave, increasing to 30 days after three years Pension contributions of up to 6% Long-service leave after six years Sabbatical leave after 10 years Annual inflation-related salary adjustments and scheduled increases subject to available funding The role is a full-time employee position within Crisis Action’s Development department.
