Supporting Global Research Excellence and Leadership The Global Young Academy is an international organisation dedicated to empowering outstanding young researchers while promoting evidence-based policymaking, science communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable development. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must satisfy the following eligibility criteria: • Hold a PhD or an equivalent degree. • Demonstrate an outstanding record of research excellence. • Show clear evidence of future academic or professional leadership. • Demonstrate commitment to contributing to society through research, science policy, education, outreach, or international collaboration. Age and career-stage requirements include: • Applicants born in 1986 or later who hold a PhD are eligible without restrictions. • Applicants born before 1986 must have obtained their PhD in 2019 or later. • Applicants born before 1986 who earned their PhD before 2019 may still apply but must provide a detailed justification explaining why they should be considered. Commitment Expected from Members The Global Young Academy is a member-driven organisation that relies on active participation from its members. Successful applicants are expected to: • Contribute a minimum of six hours per month to GYA programmes, committees, or projects. • Participate in science-for-policy and policy-for-science initiatives. • Support science communication and public engagement activities. • Promote science education nationally and internationally. • Engage in science diplomacy initiatives. • Collaborate with national young academies and international partners. Members are also encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting, with the next meeting scheduled for 21–25 June 2027 in Indonesia. Application Process Applications must be completed personally by each candidate using the official online application system. The application process takes approximately 30 minutes and includes biographical information together with several short essay questions. Applicants are encouraged to submit authentic, personalised responses that accurately reflect their experiences, achievements, and aspirations. The Academy has specifically advised applicants not to rely on AI-generated responses, noting that reviewers place greater value on genuine personal perspectives and authentic career narratives. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to participate in a second stage of assessment. Required Application Documents Applicants must upload the following documents in PDF format: • Curriculum Vitae (maximum four pages). • At least one and no more than three letters of support. • Signed Data Protection Declaration. The CV should provide a concise overview of education, employment history, and significant academic achievements suitable for a broad audience. Rather than listing every publication, applicants are encouraged to summarise major research contributions and provide hyperlinks where appropriate. Reference letters should be written specifically for the GYA application by referees familiar with the applicant’s research achievements, leadership potential, and societal engagement. Important Application Guidelines Applicants should carefully follow all submission requirements. Key guidelines include: • All application materials must be written in English. • Do not include publication lists. • Do not mention citation counts, impact factors, h-index values, university rankings, or funding amounts. • Ensure all required documents are submitted before the deadline. Applications that fail to comply with these requirements may not receive full consideration during the review process.
