The Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) is now accepting proposals for new Scholarly Working Groups (SWGs). Faculty and researchers affiliated with Harvard University and its affiliated hospitals are invited to submit proposals for projects that advance the field of global health. The submission deadline is May 3rd, 2026, at midnight ET. Purpose of Scholarly Working Groups HGHI Scholarly Working Groups are year-long initiatives designed to foster collaboration across faculty and disciplines. The primary goals of SWGs are to: Encourage interfaculty collaboration and networking Accelerate research in areas critical to advancing global health Promote the creation of grants, policy briefs, and working papers Build enduring networks to advance scientific and policy agendas Contribute to meaningful improvements in global health initiatives aligned with “Health for All” Each SWG aims to catalyze ideas that can shift scientific understanding or policy frameworks forward. Funding and Support HGHI provides competitive funding for selected SWGs. Key details include: Up to $20,000 per group through a competitive review process Duration of projects is limited to 12 months Administrative and project management support is available, including: Assistance with meeting coordination and convenings Support for hiring research or project staff if necessary Each group is expected to develop an activity calendar and a detailed work plan and budget in coordination with HGHI Membership and Collaboration To encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, each working group must: Include at least two members (excluding Faculty Leads) Represent multiple disciplines—typically involving members from at least two Harvard schools Define methodology, objectives, and outcomes within the agreed-upon work plan Focus on innovative, interdisciplinary goals with clear deliverables achievable within the 12-month timeline HGHI particularly welcomes proposals that address emerging global health challenges, including: Artificial intelligence and its impact on health equity Pandemic preparedness and response Humanitarian interventions Health system strengthening Objectives Scholarly Working Groups should aim to: Generate actionable research and insights in global health Build collaborative networks that transcend traditional departmental boundaries Foster interdisciplinary approaches to complex global health challenges Deliver tangible outputs such as publications, policy recommendations, or grant proposals Roles and Expectations Faculty leads and team members are expected to: Develop and implement a clearly defined work plan Engage actively with team members across disciplines Ensure deliverables are completed within the project timeline Participate in HGHI-supported meetings, convenings, and workshops Eligibility The program is open to: Harvard faculty and researchers Members of affiliated hospitals and institutes Groups demonstrating interdisciplinary collaboration across at least two Harvard schools Budget Proposals should include a detailed budget outlining anticipated costs HGHI funding may cover research assistance, project materials, and meeting costs Budgets must align with the 12-month project timeline Framework for Collaboration HGHI provides a structured framework to ensure SWGs operate effectively: Administrative and project management support Guidance on methodology, deliverables, and reporting Coordination assistance for meetings, workshops, or symposia Submission Guidelines Proposals should include: A clear description of the project and research objectives Details on team composition and interdisciplinary representation A work plan and timeline with measurable deliverables A proposed budget within the funding limits Explanation of how the project advances global health knowledge or policy Evaluation Criteria Proposals will be evaluated based on: Innovation and interdisciplinary approach Feasibility and clarity of deliverables Potential impact on global health research or policy Collaboration across schools and disciplines Past Cohorts Previous SWG awardees provide examples of the kinds of projects HGHI supports. Applicants are encouraged to review past cohorts to guide proposal development. HGHI looks forward to receiving innovative proposals that will advance global health through collaboration, research, and community engagement. Faculty are encouraged to submit early and ensure proposals meet all submission requirements by the deadline.
