The African Union – Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is inviting applications from visionary experts to lead the drafting of Africa’s Common Position on Sustainable, Resilient, and Nature-Positive Livestock Food Systems under the LiveSYS Project (BMZ/GIZ). This strategic initiative seeks to advance livestock as a central component of Africa’s climate solution, shape global negotiations, and unlock climate finance for millions of livestock-dependent communities across the continent. This is a unique, high-impact opportunity for professionals with deep expertise in livestock systems, continental policy, and stakeholder engagement to contribute to Africa’s sustainable development agenda. The consultancy will be home-based, spanning three months, with a deadline for applications on 2 March 2026. Purpose of the Role The selected expert will serve as the lead consultant in drafting a unified, Africa-wide position on livestock food systems that are sustainable, resilient, and nature-positive. The role goes beyond technical writing—it requires the ability to translate research, evidence, and regional priorities into a politically credible narrative that can guide continental policies and international negotiations. Key purposes include: Positioning livestock as a key component of Africa’s climate solutions Crafting a coherent, evidence-based African narrative for use in global policy forums Supporting the mobilization of climate finance to benefit livestock keepers Strengthening the capacity of AU-IBAR and partners to engage in high-level policy dialogues By leading this process, the expert will play a central role in shaping a forward-looking strategy for Africa’s livestock sector that balances productivity, sustainability, and nature-positive outcomes. Scope of Work The consultancy encompasses the following responsibilities: Lead the development and drafting of Africa’s Common Position on livestock food systems Conduct desk reviews, policy analyses, and evidence synthesis on sustainable livestock practices, climate resilience, and nature-positive approaches Facilitate consultations and stakeholder engagements across African regions to ensure inclusive and representative inputs Translate complex technical and scientific information into clear, persuasive policy documents suitable for high-level discussions Collaborate with AU-IBAR, regional bodies, and international partners to align the position with global climate and food system initiatives Support advocacy efforts by preparing briefing materials, presentations, and talking points for policy events and negotiations Desired Qualifications and Competencies The ideal candidate will have a combination of technical knowledge, policy expertise, and strategic communication skills. Required qualifications include: Extensive experience in livestock systems, food systems, or agricultural policy at continental or regional levels Proven ability to lead policy formulation and develop documents that are politically credible and technically sound Strong facilitation, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills Capacity to synthesize complex data and research into concise, actionable policy recommendations Familiarity with climate finance mechanisms, international climate negotiations, and livestock sector development is highly desirable Demonstrated experience working across multicultural and multi-stakeholder environments Expected Impact This consultancy is designed to generate a tangible and lasting impact on Africa’s livestock sector and its role in climate resilience.
