Nairobi-Based Role Supports Regional Human Rights Research and Advocacy The Associate position will be based in HRW’s Nairobi office and will require in-person attendance at least 2–3 days per week, with flexibility for remote work during the remainder of the week. The role supports the Africa Division, which is responsible for: Conducting human rights investigations across Sub-Saharan Africa Producing reports, briefings, and advocacy materials Engaging with governments, civil society, and media Coordinating public campaigns and policy interventions The successful candidate will report to one of the division’s deputy directors and provide essential administrative and operational support across multiple ongoing projects. Core Responsibilities Span Administration, Research, and Communications The Associate will be responsible for a wide range of administrative, logistical, and editorial tasks supporting HRW’s Africa-focused programs. Key responsibilities include: Coordinating meetings, schedules, and travel arrangements Preparing meeting notes and internal documentation Managing filing systems and organizational records Supporting drafting, editing, and formatting of reports and press materials Assisting with publication workflows and internal review processes Supporting translation and language-related tasks Helping organize events such as press conferences, retreats, and briefings Managing financial tracking and administrative records Assisting with recruitment and mentorship of interns Supporting field logistics during regional travel across East and Horn of Africa The role also involves maintaining communication between HRW offices, external partners, and field teams. Field and Regional Engagement Across Africa Division Work Beyond office-based responsibilities, the Associate will also provide on-the-ground support during field missions and regional engagements. This includes assisting with: Scheduling interviews and stakeholder meetings Coordinating logistics during research trips Providing interpretation support where required Representing HRW in select external engagements Supporting data gathering and research documentation in field contexts The position is designed to support HRW’s investigative work across multiple African countries, particularly in the East and Horn of Africa regions. Candidate Requirements Emphasize Communication and Regional Interest Applicants are expected to hold at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in fields such as: Human rights International relations Social sciences Related disciplines The organization also requires at least one year of relevant professional experience in administrative, research, or advocacy settings. Essential qualifications include: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure Strong organizational and interpersonal skills Capacity to work independently and collaboratively across global teams Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Valid work authorization in Kenya The organization emphasized that candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights and Sub-Saharan Africa.
