Nalafem has opened applications for the I AM NALA Fellowship Programme 2027, an initiative supporting young African women who are refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), displaced persons or stateless persons. The fellowship will run from January 2027 to July 2027 and will bring together 20 young women political leaders from Africa, including displaced Africans living in the diaspora. The programme is designed for young women who are already engaged in leadership, advocacy, political processes, peacebuilding, negotiations, social justice or community organising and who have the potential to influence decision-making and democratic processes. I AM NALA Fellowship 2027 Overview The I AM NALA Fellowship provides selected participants with capacity building, technical assistance, mentorship, solidarity, networking opportunities and access to resources. Fellows will be supported to strengthen their leadership and increase their ability to contribute to negotiations, decision-making, democratic transitions, reconciliation and peacebuilding in their countries of origin or host countries. The fellowship is particularly focused on women affected by political or climate-related crises, insecurity and displacement. The programme will include bi-monthly online sessions, including training sessions, masterclasses and discussions with experienced mentors. Fellows will have opportunities to learn from senior leaders and experts working across different institutions and organisations. The fellowship may also include in-person engagements. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be young African women between 18 and 40 years old and must fall within the fellowship’s displacement criteria. Applicants who are not refugees, internally displaced, displaced or stateless will not be considered. Eligible applicants may include: Leaders of campaigns, women-led organisations or women’s groups. Members of existing consortia or collectives focused on alliance building. Young women involved in cross-conflict negotiations. Young women currently serving in political office. Emerging political leaders working on issues affecting women and communities. Young women involved in peacebuilding, reconciliation, democratic transitions or decision-making processes. Applicants should demonstrate leadership connected to one or more of the demands outlined in the Africa Young Women Beijing +25 Manifesto and should embrace the values promoted by Nalafem. What the Fellowship Offers The I AM NALA Fellowship is intended to strengthen the leadership capacity of young women who can play meaningful roles in addressing political and social challenges affecting their communities. Participants will receive access to leadership development, technical support, mentorship, peer learning, solidarity networks and potential resourcing opportunities. The programme will also create opportunities for fellows to engage with experienced leaders and experts through online masterclasses and other learning activities. Through these engagements, fellows can strengthen their knowledge, networks and practical skills while connecting with other young African women leaders facing displacement and related challenges. Application Requirements Applicants will be required to provide personal and professional information through the application form. The form asks applicants to identify their displacement status, country of origin, country of residence, date of birth, gender, disability status, living environment, internet accessibility and preferred language. Applicants are also asked to provide their education level, current occupation, WhatsApp or telephone number, CV, LinkedIn or personal website, and social media profile. The application also asks whether applicants have signed the Beijing +25 Manifesto and whether they have signed the petition calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. The application is available through the official Nalafem application process. Deadline and Selection The application deadline for the I AM NALA Fellowship 2027 is 31 October 2026. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted, with notifications expected by 6 November 2026.
