About the Women in Economics Initiative The Women in Economics Initiative is a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization based in Berlin, Germany. Its mission is to advance gender equality in the economics profession by promoting equal opportunities and balanced representation across academia, the private sector, and public institutions. One of its flagship outputs is the WiE Index, an annual report that tracks the representation of women economists in senior roles globally. The index serves as a key evidence-based resource for policymakers, researchers, and institutions working toward gender parity. About the Role As a Volunteer Researcher, selected candidates will join a collaborative team of around ten contributors working on the WiE Index 2026, scheduled for publication in the second half of the year. This role offers a unique opportunity to be involved in the full research cycle—from data collection to final publication—while contributing to a globally relevant conversation on gender inequality in economics. Location: Remote (global) Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per week Type: Volunteer (unpaid) Key Responsibilities Volunteer researchers will contribute to multiple aspects of the project, including: Collecting, cleaning, and validating data on women’s representation in economics across sectors Analyzing datasets and creating visualizations using tools such as STATA and Excel Supporting the drafting and proofreading of the final WiE Index 2026 report Assisting in refining research methodologies and developing automated data tools This hands-on involvement ensures that volunteers gain practical experience in both quantitative and qualitative research. Skills and Qualifications The initiative is looking for motivated individuals who demonstrate: Strong written communication skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively Interest or experience in empirical research Interest in economics and gender equality issues High-level English proficiency (C1 or above) While prior technical experience is beneficial, applicants with a strong willingness to learn are also encouraged to apply.
