In Development is Hiring a Managing Editor for Fully Remote Global Role Paying Up to $100,000
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

June 15, 2026

Description

In Development has opened applications for its first-ever Managing Editor position, offering a fully remote opportunity for professionals passionate about global development, public policy, global health, and rigorous longform journalism. The role comes with a salary of up to $100,000 USD, flexible remote work arrangements, and the opportunity to help shape a newly launched international magazine focused on development issues across low- and middle-income countries. The application deadline is June 15, 2026. About In Development Launched in April 2026, In Development is a new magazine dedicated to exploring how progress happens — and sometimes fails to happen — across the developing world. The publication focuses on global health, development economics, policy institutions, and evidence-based debates shaping lower-income countries. The magazine publishes original reporting and commentary from researchers, policymakers, academics, and journalists. Its editorial approach aims to combine intellectual rigor with engaging storytelling, making complex development issues accessible without sacrificing depth or nuance. According to the organization, its articles are intended to be “more in depth than mainstream newspapers but more engaging than academic journals,” blending analytical insight with narrative clarity and humor. About the Managing Editor Role The new Managing Editor will work directly with the Editor-in-Chief to oversee the publication process from commissioning articles to final publication. This includes editing longform articles, managing contributors, shaping editorial direction, and helping maintain the magazine’s weekly publishing schedule. The position is fully remote and open to applicants worldwide. However, candidates must have legal authorization to work in their country of residence, as visa sponsorship is not available. While the role offers flexible working hours, applicants must maintain at least one to two hours of overlap with UK working hours between 11 AM and 7 PM UK time. Salary and Benefits The successful candidate will receive: Salary of up to $100,000 USD (or equivalent local currency) Health insurance coverage 401(k) or equivalent retirement benefits 28 days of annual leave Travel budget for conferences and networking opportunities Flexible remote work arrangements Key Responsibilities The Managing Editor will oversee several core editorial and operational functions, including: Editorial Leadership Commissioning and editing longform development-focused articles Conducting structural and line editing Supporting contributors with magazine-style writing Ensuring all published content meets editorial standards for rigor, clarity, and storytelling Contributor and Project Management Managing external writers and contributing editors Evaluating pitches and unsolicited submissions Maintaining editorial calendars and publication timelines Coordinating fact-checking and copy-editing workflows Strategic and Operational Support Supporting social media and audience growth strategies Collaborating with designers on visual storytelling and infographics Assisting with operational and administrative tasks where necessary Who Should Apply? The role is ideal for candidates with strong writing and editing skills alongside substantive knowledge of development economics, public policy, or global health. Applicants do not necessarily need formal editing experience, but they must demonstrate strong editorial judgment and analytical thinking during the recruitment process. Required Qualifications Candidates should demonstrate: Excellent writing and editing ability Familiarity with development economics, global health, or related fields Comfort working with data and quantitative methods Strong independent judgment and self-management skills Ability to work autonomously in a small, fast-moving team Preferred Qualifications Additional advantages include: Experience living or working in developing countries Experience editing academics for broader audiences Existing networks in development or policy sectors Knowledge of social media growth strategies Experience with infographics or data visualization Experience building or scaling projects or organizations The organization specifically encourages applications from candidates based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Recruitment Process Selected applicants will complete: A work test assessing writing and editing skills One to two interview rounds Applicants are encouraged to submit original application materials. While AI tools may be used for brainstorming or proofreading, the organization notes that heavily AI-generated responses will not advance in the selection process. Why This Opportunity Stands Out The In Development Managing Editor role offers a rare opportunity to help shape an emerging international publication focused on some of the world’s most pressing development challenges. Unlike many traditional media roles, this position combines editorial leadership with strategic influence in a rapidly evolving publication environment. The role may particularly appeal to professionals interested in: Development economics Global health policy International development communication Longform journalism Evidence-based public discourse Because the organization is still in its early stages, the Managing Editor will have substantial autonomy and influence over editorial direction, contributor relationships, and audience growth strategies. Exclusive Insight for Applicants Applicants with interdisciplinary backgrounds may have a strong advantage in this recruitment process. In Development appears to value editors who can bridge academic rigor and accessible storytelling rather than purely traditional newsroom experience. Strong candidates are likely to demonstrate: Curiosity across multiple development topics Ability to simplify complex ideas without oversimplifying them Confidence engaging with researchers and policy experts A clear editorial voice and narrative instinct Candidates from the Global South may also bring valuable lived experience and regional perspectives that align closely with the publication’s mission to rethink global development conversations beyond traditional Western frameworks. Applicants preparing for the work test should focus on showing: Strong structural editing skills Clarity and readability Analytical depth Ability to balance evidence with engaging storytelling Comfort handling quantitative discussions in accessible ways For professionals interested in development communication, public policy journalism, or impact-driven media, this role offers both global flexibility and significant editorial responsibility in a growing international publication.
