The Institute for Economic Justice is seeking a Researcher or Senior Researcher to join its Global Economic Governance (GEG) programme. This full-time position, based in Johannesburg, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-level research, policy development, and advocacy aimed at advancing economic justice across South Africa, Africa, and globally. The role is offered on a three-year contract and places the successful candidate at the centre of critical global policy discussions on international financial systems and reform. Role Overview The Researcher/Senior Researcher will play a key role in shaping debates around international financial architecture and economic transformation. The position combines rigorous research with practical policy engagement, contributing to real-time discussions within influential global platforms such as the G20, African Union, and BRICS. The role is designed for individuals who are comfortable navigating complex and often contested policy spaces while producing impactful, evidence-based outputs. Key Responsibilities Research and Policy Development Lead and produce high-quality, policy-relevant research outputs Coordinate research activities across internal teams Commission and oversee external research consultants Translate complex analysis into accessible: Policy briefs Reports Summary documents Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Support and implement advocacy strategies with: Government institutions Civil society organisations Develop policy proposals informed by research findings Engage with media platforms, including radio and television Produce and oversee advocacy materials Strategic Contributions Contribute to the overall direction of the GEG programme Participate in high-level policy forums and debates Support broader organisational priorities within IEJ Mentorship and Capacity Building Mentor junior researchers and team members Review and strengthen internal and external research outputs Contribute to building institutional research capacity Project Management and Donor Engagement Support project planning, implementation, and reporting Contribute to budgeting and financial oversight Assist in drafting donor proposals and reports Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is an analytically strong and policy-oriented researcher with a demonstrated commitment to economic justice and structural reform. Core attributes include: Ability to work across: Research Advocacy Stakeholder engagement Strong communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences Capacity to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments Collaborative mindset with the ability to work independently Skills and Experience Minimum qualifications: PhD (for Senior Researcher) or Master’s degree (for Researcher) in: Economics Development Studies Finance Public Administration Sociology or related fields Required expertise: Strong research background in international financial issues such as: Sovereign debt International tax Financial institutions Payment systems Proven ability to produce policy-relevant research Experience in: Policy development Advocacy Public policy engagement Familiarity with national, regional, or global policy processes Technical and professional skills: Proficiency in tools such as: Microsoft Office Statistical software (e.g., Stata or R) Strong organisational and analytical abilities Excellent writing and communication skills About the GEG Project The Global Economic Governance Project focuses on reforming international financial systems to promote equitable and sustainable development. It engages with major global processes and institutions, including the G20, African Union, and BRICS, while collaborating with stakeholders across government, labour, and civil society. The project addresses key issues such as: Global debt systems Tax justice Financial regulation Its work aims to influence policy outcomes and advance progressive alternatives in global economic governance. Contract and Salary Contract Duration: 3 years (renewable based on funding) Working Hours: Full-time Salary range (Total Cost to Company): Senior Researcher: R916,321 – R1,145,401 Researcher: R687,241 – R859,051 The position offers flexibility for remote work, with travel requirements depending on project needs.
