Contract Details Location: Nairobi, Kenya Contract Type: Fixed-term, one-year renewable (subject to budget and performance) Position Type: Resident Contract Job Level: C2 The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is seeking a Lead Internal Auditor to join its Nairobi Regional Delegation. This key position will support the Head of Internal Audit in strengthening the organization’s governance, risk management, and control processes in line with Article 50 of the ICRC Internal Regulations. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring the efficiency, accountability, and integrity of ICRC’s global operations. About the ICRC The ICRC operates worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by armed conflict and situations of violence. Guided by the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence, the ICRC’s mandate derives from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It works closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their International Federation to ensure a coordinated humanitarian response that addresses the urgent needs of victims while upholding respect for international humanitarian law. With operations spanning more than 100 countries, the ICRC delivers life-saving assistance, supports conflict-affected communities, and advocates for the protection of human dignity. Role Overview Reporting directly to the Head of Internal Audit, the Lead Internal Auditor will be responsible for evaluating the relevance, effectiveness, and efficiency of the ICRC’s internal systems, policies, and procedures. The role involves both strategic oversight and hands-on engagement in audit activities across headquarters and field delegations. The incumbent will contribute to strengthening risk management, operational efficiency, and accountability mechanisms across the organization, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal standards. Key Responsibilities The Lead Internal Auditor will: Conduct audit engagements as defined in the Annual Audit Plan, including field, thematic, and specialized audits. Evaluate the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and internal control frameworks across global operations. Assess the ICRC’s compliance with internal policies, procedures, strategies, and external legal requirements. Analyze the organization’s resource management to ensure effective, efficient, and ethical use of funds. Prepare comprehensive audit reports with clear findings, recommendations, and improvement strategies. Contribute to the development and continuous enhancement of the Internal Audit Department’s methodologies and strategies. Ensure audit practices align with evolving international standards and best practices. Coordinate small teams (up to three staff members) in the execution of complex audits, ensuring quality and consistency. Provide expert input in specialized areas such as risk management, cybersecurity, digital transformation, or human resources. Strengthen audit processes through data-driven analysis, automation, and innovative methodologies. Participate in field audits for up to 20–30% of the year, including at least two delegation visits annually, typically requiring travel for three consecutive weeks per mission. Share insights and information to deepen the Internal Audit Unit’s understanding of operational environments, humanitarian trends, and emerging risks. Contribute to the ICRC’s broader operational and humanitarian diplomacy objectives in Kenya and beyond. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will possess a combination of professional audit expertise, strategic thinking, and commitment to humanitarian principles. Education and Experience: A university degree or equivalent professional experience in accounting, finance, business administration, or related fields. A minimum of 12–15 years of experience in internal or external auditing. Prior experience in the humanitarian sector or international organizations is a significant asset. Professional Certifications (preferred): Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) Languages and Technical Skills: Excellent command of English is essential. Knowledge of an additional working language (French, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian) is highly desirable. Competence in one or more of the following areas is an advantage: risk management, digital transformation, cybersecurity, project management, or human resources auditing.
