Programme Purpose The fellowship provides an opportunity for outstanding scholars working outside the United Kingdom to undertake high-quality, original research under the mentorship of a UK-based host researcher. The primary objectives of the scheme include: Attracting highly qualified early-career international researchers to conduct research in the United Kingdom Supporting the pursuit of innovative, rigorous, and impactful research projects Providing opportunities for skills acquisition, professional development, and knowledge exchange Fostering long-term international collaborations through sustained networking and engagement with the International Fellowships alumni community Through these objectives, the programme contributes to strengthening international research linkages while enhancing the overall research capacity within the UK. Eligibility Requirements To qualify for the International Fellowships 2026 round, applicants were required to meet the following criteria: Hold a PhD, or be in the final stages of completing a PhD, with all requirements—including the viva—finalized before the Final Awards Committee convenes on 1 June 2026 Possess no more than five years of active, full-time postdoctoral research experience at the time of application, excluding formally documented career breaks but including teaching or industry-based research experience Be based outside the United Kingdom at the time of application Not hold UK citizenship Demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English Submit a well-defined, mutually beneficial research proposal that has been formally agreed upon with a UK-based host researcher Applicants were strongly encouraged to consult the scheme notes to ensure full compliance with all eligibility requirements. Duration and Value of the Award The fellowship provides support for a period of 24 months. Awards are issued at 80% of full economic cost (FEC). Applicants may request: Research expenses of up to £12,000 Relocation funding of up to £8,000 Both cost categories must be clearly justified within the application. In addition to the core award, eligible fellows may apply for follow-on alumni funding after completing their fellowship. This additional support is intended to strengthen ongoing collaborations and facilitate sustained networking with UK-based or international research partners.
