The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is recruiting a Programme Associate (WASH) to support water, sanitation, and hygiene programming within its Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya. This position plays an important role in strengthening disaster risk reduction and climate resilience across cross-border communities in the Horn of Africa. The role provides administrative and programmatic support for the implementation and monitoring of WASH-related initiatives focused on migrants, refugees, and vulnerable populations. Position Overview Position Title: Programme Associate (WASH) Organization: International Organization for Migration Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya Grade: G-5 Contract Type: Special Short-Term Graded Contract Contract Duration: Up to 9 months Organizational Unit: Regional Office – Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Resilience Programs Application Deadline: 25 March 2026 About the Organization Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization working in the field of migration and a related organization of the United Nations system. The agency collaborates closely with governments, civil society organizations, and international partners to promote humane and orderly migration worldwide. IOM’s work focuses on supporting migrants and communities by providing services, technical assistance, and policy guidance to ensure migration contributes positively to development and stability. Role Purpose Under the supervision of the Senior Regional WASH Programme Manager and the National Programme Officer, the Programme Associate will support project coordination, monitoring, and administrative processes for WASH initiatives across the Horn of Africa. The position contributes to a regional program designed to enhance disaster risk reduction in water and climate change while strengthening resilience among cross-border communities in Somalia and Kenya. Key Responsibilities The Programme Associate will provide operational support to ensure effective program delivery. Core responsibilities include: Project Implementation and Monitoring Assist in implementing and monitoring WASH project activities. Track progress and achievements of ongoing program activities. Participate in field monitoring and evaluation exercises. Data Management and Reporting Retrieve, compile, and analyze project-related information and data. Prepare reports, statistical tables, presentations, and briefing notes. Support drafting project status reports and identify implementation challenges. Administrative and Financial Coordination Monitor project budgets and verify availability of funds. Support approval processes for project expenditures. Maintain accurate financial and administrative documentation. Stakeholder Coordination Serve as a focal point for administrative coordination of project activities. Liaise with government authorities, implementing partners, and donors. Support coordination with United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners. Meeting and Event Management Organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions. Prepare documentation and logistical arrangements for stakeholder engagements. Participate in conferences and coordination meetings. Partner Monitoring Assist in monitoring implementing partners’ activities. Report any non-compliance issues to the supervisor. Capacity Building Provide guidance and training to junior or newly recruited staff members when required. Required Qualifications Applicants must meet the following education and experience requirements. Education Bachelor’s degree in one of the following or related fields: Political or Social Sciences International Relations Development Studies Migration Studies Human Rights Law Alternatively: A secondary school diploma with at least five years of relevant professional experience. Academic qualifications must come from institutions recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Professional Experience Candidates should demonstrate: Experience collaborating with government institutions, UN agencies, and non-governmental organizations. Experience supporting programs related to migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, or trafficking survivors. Prior work with international humanitarian organizations or development agencies in multicultural environments. Experience in migration-related programming or humanitarian assistance is highly desirable. Key Skills Successful candidates should demonstrate: Knowledge of migration-related program areas. Familiarity with UN or donor-funded project management systems. Understanding of financial rules and administrative procedures for international programs. Strong analytical and reporting skills. Language Requirements All IOM staff must be fluent in at least one official IOM language. For this position: Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Kiswahili is also required. Language proficiency may be assessed during the recruitment process through written or oral evaluations.
