Role Overview The International Rescue Committee (IRC) seeks a Senior Data Engineer to support its global mission of assisting communities affected by conflict, disaster, and displacement. The role operates within IRC UK and supports the External Relations (ER) department, which leads private fundraising, communications, and policy and advocacy work. The position strengthens IRC’s growing analytics infrastructure, ensuring the organisation can scale data capabilities as needs evolve. The Senior Data Engineer contributes to building robust data pipelines, enhancing machine learning operations, and supporting business intelligence requirements across multiple global teams. Purpose of the Role The Senior Data Engineer plays a central role in the ER analytics team, working alongside analysts and data scientists to design, maintain, and optimise data models and machine learning systems. This position supports IRC’s goal of improving evidence-driven decision-making through high-quality data engineering and operational efficiency. The role ensures that ER’s global data workflows function reliably, efficiently, and in line with modern data engineering best practices. Key Responsibilities Data Pipeline and Model Development Design, maintain, and optimise data pipelines using modern ELT frameworks. Oversee timely loading of datasets into cloud-based data warehouses. Ensure stability, accuracy, and scalability of data models using SQL and dbt. Implement monitoring, testing, and automation procedures across all workflows. Machine Learning Operations Collaborate with data scientists on end-to-end ML workflows, from data preparation to deployment. Build and maintain MLflow-based systems for model lifecycle management. Support ML model deployment, versioning, and monitoring in production environments. Integrate ML solutions into broader data infrastructure. Software Engineering Practices Apply standard development principles including version control, testing, and peer review. Prepare detailed documentation, conceptual diagrams, and technical specifications. Ensure data consistency, reproducibility, and long-term maintainability. Technical Leadership and Mentorship Provide advisory support to analysts and junior data team members. Advocate for strong analytics engineering practices across the ER department. Contribute to improving PowerBI data modelling governance and ML Ops culture. Infrastructure and System Improvements Recommend enhancements to the ER data stack. Collaborate with engineering teams to implement new ELT pipelines. Support infrastructure redesigns for improved performance and scalability. Lead the integration of new datasets into the ER analytics environment. Required Skills and Experience Technical Skills At least four years of experience in data and analytics. Minimum two years of professional experience working with large datasets using SQL and Python. Strong proficiency with modern data pipeline tools such as Airflow and dbt. Experience with MLflow or comparable ML lifecycle management tools. Proven experience working with major cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, or Azure. Strong understanding of modern data stack principles, data testing, and version control. Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Desirable Skills Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms. Experience deploying advanced dbt capabilities including tests, snapshots, and packages. Practical experience with PowerBI, Power Query, DAX/MDX. Exposure to infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation. Working knowledge of distributed data frameworks such as Spark or Kafka. Behavioural Competencies Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Working Environment The role is based in the UK and open to remote working arrangements. The salary range is GBP 54,350 to GBP 65,800, and candidates must have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom.
