The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a Senior Youth Program Specialist to support and deliver high-impact youth and education programming in Spokane, Washington. This full-time, limited-term position operates in a hybrid work environment and plays a critical role in advancing educational access and wellbeing for youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds. The Senior Youth Program Specialist contributes directly to this mission by helping newcomer youth build academic skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Programme Vision and Role Purpose The IRC Washington Youth and Education Program envisions a future in which refugee and immigrant youth are equipped with the skills and resources needed to pursue meaningful educational and career pathways. The programme supports school-aged youth as they adapt to new learning environments, strengthen English language skills, and build positive relationships within schools and communities. The Senior Youth Program Specialist is responsible for the teaching, coordination, and implementation of youth education initiatives in Spokane. The role combines direct instruction, programme coordination, family engagement, and support to community tutors, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed learning experiences for multilingual learners. Core Youth and Education Programmes IRC’s youth programming serves elementary through high school students and is delivered through multiple complementary models. Afterschool and Reading Programmes In-person elementary afterschool reading club during the fall Virtual elementary reading programmes during spring and summer Integration of literacy development, social-emotional learning, and themes of diversity and belonging Hands-on enrichment activities including STEM projects and creative crafts Family Engagement Initiatives Workshops and events hosted in collaboration with schools and community partners Topics include: School resources and navigation Digital literacy and online safety Youth enrichment opportunities High school graduation pathways Accessing free community spaces such as libraries and discovery centers Individualized Tutoring Programme Weekly one-to-one tutoring for K–12 students over 3–6 months Focus areas include: English language acquisition Literacy and math skills Homework support Social-emotional learning Tutoring takes place in homes or online and aligns with Stanford University’s National Student Success Accelerator standards Key Responsibilities The Senior Youth Program Specialist is responsible for a broad range of instructional and coordination duties. Programme Coordination and Teaching Plan and manage logistics for in-person and virtual programmes Deliver direct instruction to multilingual learners Prepare lessons using IRC curriculum and materials Coordinate volunteers, technology, supplies, and family communication Track attendance, paperwork, and programme data Family Engagement and Community Outreach Plan and coordinate family workshops and events Manage logistics including interpreters, schedules, and documentation Conduct outreach and recruitment, including community tabling Facilitate workshops or coordinate guest presenters Individualized Tutoring Support Provide direct weekly instruction to a small group of families Develop tailored lesson plans Maintain confidential student records and case notes Support volunteer tutors through observation, feedback, and supervision Assist with quality assurance and safeguarding accountability Additional Programme Support Contribute to summer reading programmes, youth internships, and field trips Participate fully in team meetings and professional development Ensure compliance with IRC policies and safeguarding standards Qualifications and Experience Candidates are expected to bring both technical skills and cultural competence. Required or Preferred Qualifications Degree or certification in education, youth development, or related field, or 2–4 years of relevant experience TESOL certification preferred Experience working with multilingual learners and immigrant or refugee communities Strong facilitation, instructional, and organisational skills Proficiency in English; additional languages such as Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, or Ukrainian are an asset Commitment to trauma-informed, anti-racist, and inclusive practices Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities Working Environment and Schedule The role operates within a flexible but structured schedule. Key working conditions include: Hybrid work across IRC offices, schools, homes, and remote settings Full-time schedule of 37.5 hours per week Availability required at least three weekdays between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm Occasional evening or weekend activities Reliable transportation and high-speed internet required Comfort working in refugee family homes The position is funded through September 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension subject to renewed funding.
