This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to supporting human rights defenders and strengthening international human rights systems. ISHR internships are designed to provide meaningful professional experience, enabling interns to contribute substantively to the organisation’s advocacy, coalition-building, and engagement with international human rights mechanisms. About ISHR The International Service for Human Rights is a leading international NGO that supports human rights defenders, strengthens human rights systems, builds and leads coalitions, and responds to significant and systemic human rights challenges. ISHR works closely with civil society, diplomats, and international institutions, particularly within the United Nations system, to advance the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide. Internship Overview ISHR offers structured internship programmes twice each year: First round: 1 February – 31 July Second round: 1 September – 28/29 February The Advocacy Programme Internship advertised under this call forms part of the first internship round for 2026. Key features of ISHR internships include: Full integration into ISHR teams and daily operations Meaningful participation in advocacy, research, and programme activities Recognition of interns’ skills, perspectives, and contributions ISHR does not accept spontaneous applications. All internship opportunities are advertised, and applications are only accepted through official vacancy announcements. Internship Conditions and Compensation Since 2021, ISHR has committed to offering paid internships only. Interns receive a stipend, either through ISHR directly or via a third-party funding arrangement. Additional conditions include: For internships based in Geneva, a tripartite internship agreement is required between the intern, ISHR, and the relevant teaching institution or funding body, in accordance with Canton of Geneva labour law This requirement does not apply to internships based in New York Training and Learning Opportunities ISHR internships are structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience within an international human rights organisation. Interns can expect: Full participation in staff meetings to gain insight into ISHR’s strategic priorities and operations Opportunities to interact and network with: Human rights defenders Diplomats United Nations officials NGO professionals Practical training and guidance, where relevant, on: Monitoring UN human rights mechanisms Drafting advocacy and policy documents Research and reporting Use of communications and advocacy tools Dedicated supervision by one or two experienced ISHR managers Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ISHR is firmly committed to the principles of equal employment opportunity and non-discrimination.
