Role Overview The External Affairs Officer will support media relations and communication strategies for the World Bank, helping to strengthen the institution’s global reputation and visibility. The role involves working closely with journalists, development partners, and internal teams to ensure accurate and impactful media coverage of the Bank’s initiatives. Candidates should have strong media relations experience, strategic communication skills, and knowledge of international development issues. Key Responsibilities The External Affairs Officer will contribute to multiple communications activities, including media relations, event coordination, and risk monitoring. Primary responsibilities include: Serving as a main media relations contact for journalists and media organizations Designing and implementing media outreach and monitoring strategies Supporting communication plans for major publications and initiatives Preparing briefing materials for senior management media engagements Managing and responding to media requests Coordinating press briefings, conferences, and media events Monitoring media coverage and identifying potential reputational risks Supporting communication efforts in regional and international markets The role requires collaboration with global teams across the World Bank’s regional and sectoral operations. Required Qualifications Applicants must meet the following education and experience requirements: Education Master’s degree in a relevant field such as: Communications Political Science Economics International Relations or Public Affairs Journalism Equivalent combinations of education and professional experience may also be considered. Professional experience Minimum five years of experience in communications or media relations Experience working with: Multilateral organizations Development institutions International financial institutions (preferred) Key Skills and Competencies Successful candidates should demonstrate strong communication, analytical, and relationship-building abilities. Important skills include: Proven strategic media management experience Strong media network and relationships Experience communicating with: NGOs Government officials International institutions Private sector stakeholders Ability to identify and manage reputational risks Strong planning and organizational skills Ability to work independently in multicultural environments Excellent written and spoken English Knowledge of additional languages is considered an advantage.
