Role Overview The Director of Advocacy Communications strengthens how ISOC communicates its advocacy positions to key audiences, including: Legislators and regulators Civil society organizations Think tanks and academia Media stakeholders Reporting to the Director of Communications, Community & Advocacy, the role is part of the Strategic Communications team and contributes directly to delivering the ISOC 2030 Strategy. The position requires strong experience in advocacy communications within civil society, Internet governance, or related public-interest policy spaces. The successful candidate will translate complex policy and technical positions into persuasive narratives that influence public discourse and policy debates. Why This Role Matters As global Internet governance challenges intensify, effective communication of advocacy positions is critical. ISOC’s influence depends not only on strong policy frameworks but also on its ability to: Clearly articulate what it supports and opposes Run coordinated global and regional advocacy campaigns Respond rapidly to policy and regulatory developments This role ensures ISOC remains communications-ready in a dynamic and politically sensitive global environment. Key Responsibilities 1. Advocacy Messaging & Campaigns Design and implement proactive advocacy communications campaigns aligned with strategic priorities Develop compelling narratives that translate technical and policy issues into accessible messaging Maintain consistency in global and regional advocacy communications 2. Audience-Focused Communications Develop tailored advocacy narratives for policymakers, regulators, civil society, and media Adapt tone and format to regional contexts and audience needs Strengthen clarity and impact of ISOC’s external communications 3. Media & Public Engagement Develop advocacy-focused media engagement strategies Prepare spokespeople with messaging frameworks, briefing materials, and talking points Identify proactive opportunities for commentary and narrative placement 4. Strategic Communications Readiness Build and maintain advocacy communications tools, including: Message frameworks Campaign toolkits Rapid-response materials Enable swift, credible responses to global or regional policy developments Monitor policy developments that may impact Internet security, trust, and global connectivity 5. Cross-Organizational Collaboration Partner with policy, community engagement, and leadership teams Align messaging across ISOC and the Foundation under a “One Communications” approach Work closely with ISOC’s Head of Global Advocacy Desired Qualifications 7–10+ years of experience in advocacy communications or strategic campaign communications Experience engaging advocacy audiences, including policymakers, regulators, civil society, think tanks, and media Background in Internet governance, digital rights, technology policy, or related public-interest sectors Strong policy fluency and ability to translate policy debates into compelling messaging Proven experience supporting media engagement and spokesperson preparation Excellent writing, editing, and narrative development skills Key Attributes Clear and structured thinker Comfortable at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and communications Collaborative and cross-functional team player Calm and effective in fast-moving environments Strong alignment with ISOC’s mission and long-term strategy What the Organization Offers Opportunity to shape global Internet advocacy Inclusive and collaborative global team culture Generous paid time off and public holidays Flexible remote work model Paid volunteer time Professional development and education benefits Competitive compensation based on geographic market benchmarks Equal Opportunity The Internet Society Foundation is an equal opportunity employer.
