The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is inviting applications for an internship position under its Rwanda Article 6 Readiness Project, based in Kigali. This opportunity is designed for motivated students and recent graduates who are passionate about climate action, sustainable development, and international carbon markets. The internship provides hands-on experience supporting a landmark initiative under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. About the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) The Global Green Growth Institute is a treaty-based, intergovernmental organisation dedicated to supporting strong, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. GGGI works closely with governments, international partners, and the private sector to advance green growth strategies that align economic development with climate resilience and environmental sustainability. Through policy support, capacity building, and innovative financing mechanisms, GGGI helps member and partner countries transition toward low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathways. About the Article 6 Readiness Programme In October 2024, GGGI launched the Carbon Transaction Facility (CTF), a pioneering mechanism designed to scale international carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The facility provides an integrated solution to support host countries in building readiness for carbon market participation and facilitating transactions of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). A central component of the CTF is the Article 6 Readiness Facility, a multi-donor fund expected to mobilise up to USD 50 million. The facility supports: Capacity building and technical assistance Institutional strengthening International knowledge exchange Development of pipelines for mitigation activities eligible for carbon trading As part of this initiative, GGGI is implementing an Article 6 readiness project in Rwanda, launched in early 2025, working closely with the Government of Rwanda to accelerate the operationalisation of the country’s Carbon Market Framework. Current Internship Opportunity GGGI’s Rwanda programme is seeking a talented and motivated intern to support the implementation of the Article 6 Readiness Project. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in climate change mitigation, carbon markets, and international development, and who are looking to gain practical experience within an international organisation. The intern will work under the supervision of the Rwanda Article 6 Project Manager and will contribute to a wide range of research, analytical, and operational activities. Key Responsibilities The intern will support the project team with tasks including, but not limited to: Supporting day-to-day project implementation activities Conducting literature reviews and background research on climate and carbon market topics Assisting with the preparation of reports, briefing notes, and presentations Supporting the planning and delivery of stakeholder consultations and capacity-building workshops Preparing training materials, coordinating logistics, and drafting workshop reports Collecting and analysing data from relevant sectors to inform project activities Reviewing, editing, and proofreading technical and communication materials in line with GGGI guidelines Supporting stakeholder communication and coordination with government agencies, private sector actors, and partners Providing administrative and documentation support across project components Undertaking additional tasks as assigned, aligned with project priorities The internship offers exposure to real-world climate policy implementation and carbon market operationalisation in a dynamic international environment. Eligibility Criteria To be eligible for the GGGI Internship Programme, applicants must: Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or in a Master’s or PhD programme, or Be a recent graduate (within the past 12 months) Be studying or have studied a discipline relevant to GGGI’s work Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English proficiency Qualifications and Skills Preferred qualifications and attributes include: Academic background in engineering, sustainability, climate or environmental science, or a related field Understanding of greenhouse gas emissions, climate change mitigation, and carbon markets Prior exposure to climate change or environmental assessment work is an advantage but not required Strong interest in sustainable development, green growth, and environmental issues Proficiency in standard office software and willingness to learn new tools Ability to work under time pressure and deliver high-quality outputs Strong teamwork and collaboration skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English Internship Conditions Key information about the internship includes: Duration: Minimum of 3 months, up to a maximum of 6 months Location: Kigali, Rwanda Stipend: USD 500 per month (unless funded by a sponsoring institution) Travel and living costs: To be covered by the intern or sponsoring institution Visa: GGGI will provide a support letter; interns are responsible for visa arrangements Medical insurance: Proof of valid coverage is required before commencement Additional conditions include confidentiality obligations, standard working hours, pre-approved leave arrangements, and a review of learning outcomes prior to completion. A certificate of completion is available upon request.
