INTERSOS is an international humanitarian organisation founded in 1992, operating on the frontlines of crises to support populations affected by conflict, extreme poverty, and natural or manmade disasters. With a strong focus on Protection, Health, and Nutrition, INTERSOS works in complex and hard-to-reach environments where humanitarian needs are highest and assistance is often limited. Curricular internships at INTERSOS are designed as structured learning experiences for students who wish to apply academic knowledge in a real-world humanitarian context while contributing meaningfully to the organisation’s work. Purpose of the Internship Programme The INTERSOS curricular internship programme enables students to: Gain practical exposure to the daily operations of an international NGO Develop professional skills aligned with humanitarian work Explore career interests and competencies in a values-driven organisation Acquire first-hand experience through collaboration with international and national humanitarian professionals For internships partially or fully based in an INTERSOS mission abroad, participants also gain valuable field experience, often serving as an entry point into a long-term humanitarian career. Eligibility Criteria Curricular internships are open to: Students enrolled in university or master’s degree programmes Academic programmes that require a formal training project and agreement with INTERSOS as the host organisation Candidates who are able to remain enrolled for the entire duration of the internship Departments Hosting Interns Internships are primarily offered within the following departments and units: Programmes Department Protection Unit Medical Unit Human Resources Department Finance Department Logistics Department Donors and Grants Unit Internal Audit Placement depends on organisational needs, candidate profiles, and operational contexts. Internship Modalities and Duration Depending on the department and operational requirements, internships may be structured as follows: HQ or Regional Office placement (Rome, Dakar, Amman, Nairobi) for 3 to 6 months Combined placement, including: 3 to 4 months at HQ or a Regional Office 2 to 3 months in an INTERSOS mission abroad Total duration not exceeding 6 months Full mission-based internship in an INTERSOS mission abroad or Italy Mission for up to 6 months Some internships based at HQ may allow remote or smart-working arrangements, where explicitly stated in the vacancy notice. The selection of missions abroad depends on security conditions, logistical feasibility, and the chosen internship formula. Desired Candidate Profile INTERSOS seeks highly motivated students who: Share organisational values such as equality, justice, dignity, solidarity, and peace Demonstrate a strong interest in humanitarian action Are able to work collaboratively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams Show flexibility and adaptability to complex professional and living environments Display strong motivation and willingness to actively contribute Candidates who do not immediately find a suitable vacancy are encouraged to apply through general internship opportunities when available. Recruitment Process The internship recruitment process follows these steps: Application submission through official vacancy channels Human Resources interview for shortlisted candidates Matching interview with the hosting department Onboarding, including induction and preparatory training While only shortlisted candidates are contacted for interviews, INTERSOS aims to provide timely feedback whenever possible. Working Conditions and Benefits Induction and Training All interns receive an induction programme covering INTERSOS structure, decision-making processes, and working tools Compensation Internships are unpaid Benefits Meal vouchers for internships conducted at HQ in Rome or within the Italy Mission No meal vouchers for remote internships or mission-based internships abroad Travel and Logistics (for mission-based internships) Round-trip flights covered by INTERSOS Shared accommodation provided in a guesthouse Visa support and coverage of visa-related costs Insurance and Health Accident and third-party liability insurance for HQ and Italy Mission internships (if not provided by the university) Medical insurance for mission-based internships abroad Reimbursement of mandatory vaccinations in line with INTERSOS policy Psychological support available upon request Leave Entitlement Two days of leave per month of internship Featured Internship Opportunity Communication Internship (Curricular) This internship is based at INTERSOS Headquarters with a remote duty station and focuses on strengthening the organisation’s external communication and visibility.
