The Government of Ireland has announced applications for the Ireland Fellows Programme – Kader Asmal Fellowship, offering South African professionals the opportunity to pursue fully funded master’s degree studies in Ireland beginning in the 2027/2028 academic year. The prestigious fellowship aims to develop future leaders, strengthen national capacity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and foster lasting relationships between Ireland and South Africa. Fellowship Objectives The Ireland Fellows Programme is designed to: Develop future leaders across multiple sectors. Strengthen national capacity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Foster long-term partnerships and cooperation between Ireland and South Africa. Support professionals committed to contributing to their country’s development. The programme provides recipients with an opportunity to gain internationally recognised postgraduate qualifications while building professional networks and leadership skills. Eligible Applicants The Kader Asmal Fellowship is open exclusively to residents and nationals of South Africa. Applicants must meet several eligibility requirements, including: Be a resident national of South Africa. Have at least two years of substantial work experience directly related to their intended field of study. Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited and government-recognised higher education institution. Have achieved a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to a first-class honours or second-class honours Grade 1. Applicants with a second-class honours Grade 2 may also be considered if they possess significant relevant professional experience. Have obtained their bachelor’s qualification in 2015 or later. Not already possess a master’s degree or higher qualification. Not currently be studying towards, or due to begin, a master’s or higher qualification during the 2026/2027 academic year. Be available to commence a new master’s programme in Ireland from August 2027 onwards. Leadership and Development Focus Beyond academic excellence, applicants are expected to demonstrate: Strong leadership potential. A commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals within South Africa. An interest in strengthening bilateral relations between Ireland and South Africa. Clear academic and career objectives aligned with their chosen field of study. Candidates must also select three eligible master’s programmes from the official Directory of Eligible Programmes that align with their educational background and professional experience. Wide Range of Eligible Study Areas The fellowship supports master’s programmes across numerous disciplines, including: Agriculture Health Education Human Rights Computer Science Engineering Business Environmental Studies Public Policy Development Studies And several other approved postgraduate programmes listed in the official directory. Applicants should carefully review the academic and English language requirements for each selected programme before applying. Fellowship Conditions Applicants should note the following conditions: Individuals may only have applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme once previously. Successful candidates must be available to take up the fellowship during the 2027/2028 academic year. The fellowship covers only the award recipient. Financial support does not extend to spouses, partners, dependents, or accompanying family members. Visa and financial assistance for dependents are not included. Three-Stage Application Process Applications are assessed through a competitive three-stage selection process comprising: Stage 1: Preliminary Application. Stage 2: Detailed Application. Stage 3: Interviews. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the official Applicant Guidance Note before beginning their application, as eligibility requirements may vary depending on the participating country. English Language Requirements Admission to Irish higher education institutions requires applicants to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency. Applicants shortlisted after the preliminary application stage who do not already possess the required English language certification will be invited to complete the Duolingo English Test, which is accepted by most Irish universities. However, shortlisted candidates whose chosen institution or programme does not recognise the Duolingo test will instead be required to sit the IELTS examination in January 2027. English language certification is also a mandatory requirement for obtaining an Irish student visa. Preparing a Competitive Application Prospective applicants are encouraged to: Review the Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Programmes. Read the Stage 1 Applicant Guidance Note thoroughly. Select three programmes that align with their qualifications and career goals. Ensure they satisfy all academic and English language entry requirements. Prepare evidence of leadership experience and professional achievements. Early preparation is recommended to maximise competitiveness during the selection process.
