Johns Hopkins University Postdoctoral Fellowship in Moral and Political Economy 2027
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 5, 2026

Description

The Center for Economy and Society (CES) at the SNF Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University, is inviting applications for two or more Postdoctoral Fellowships in Moral and Political Economy for scholars working across disciplinary boundaries. The fellowship offers an annual $70,000 stipend, research and moving support, and an opportunity to contribute to teaching, research and intellectual life at Johns Hopkins University. The fellowship is based in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, with fellows expected to remain in the Baltimore-Washington region during the academic year. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027. Fellowship Overview The Center for Economy and Society is an interdisciplinary research and educational initiative focused on renewing debates about political economy. Its work brings together scholars across disciplinary and ideological boundaries to examine complex economic, political and social questions. Current areas of research at CES include artificial intelligence and the economy, economic security, poverty and development, workplace economics, political economies of exclusion, care infrastructure, U.S.-China relations and global economic leadership. The postdoctoral fellowship is designed for scholars whose research engages with moral and political economy from cross-disciplinary perspectives. Fellows will become active members of the CES intellectual community while contributing to the teaching and mentoring activities associated with the university’s BA in Moral and Political Economy. Fellowship Benefits Successful fellows will receive an annual stipend of $70,000. The fellowship also provides modest moving and research budgets, helping fellows relocate to the Baltimore-Washington region and support their scholarly activities. The appointment is initially for two years, with an opportunity to extend the fellowship for a third academic year, resulting in a potential three-year fellowship period. The fellowship combines research, teaching, student advising and participation in an interdisciplinary academic community. Fellows will therefore have an opportunity to strengthen both their scholarly profile and teaching experience. Teaching and Academic Responsibilities Fellows are expected to contribute to the undergraduate Moral and Political Economy programme. During the first year, fellows will teach two sections or seminars, while the second and third years may involve teaching up to three sections or seminars. They will also advise senior thesis students and participate actively in the intellectual community of the Center for Economy and Society. During the academic year, fellows are expected to remain in residence in the Baltimore-Washington region, making this a primarily in-person academic fellowship rather than a remote opportunity. Eligibility and Qualifications The fellowship is intended for scholars working on cross-disciplinary topics related to moral and political economy. Applicants should expect to have their PhD in hand before July 1, 2027. The programme welcomes scholars from a range of academic backgrounds. Current CES faculty and postdoctoral scholars have doctoral training in areas including: Economics History Political Science Public Policy Sociology Candidates whose research crosses conventional disciplinary boundaries are particularly relevant to the intellectual orientation of the Center for Economy and Society. Application Requirements Applicants are required to submit the following materials through Interfolio: A statement of purpose of up to 1,500 words outlining research interests and teaching experience An updated CV An article-length writing sample Three letters of recommendation The application should demonstrate a strong research profile, clear engagement with moral and political economy, and evidence of teaching experience or potential. Application Deadline The application deadline is November 6, 2026. The American Economic Association listing states that review of applications will begin on November 7, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to prepare their materials well before the deadline, particularly because the fellowship requires three recommendation letters. Why This Fellowship Is Valuable The Johns Hopkins postdoctoral fellowship offers more than financial support. It provides scholars with an opportunity to conduct research within an interdisciplinary environment that connects economics, politics, history, sociology and public policy. The Center for Economy and Society focuses on major contemporary questions including inequality, development, artificial intelligence, economic security, global economic relations and changing labour markets. Fellows can therefore develop research while engaging with scholars and students working across different disciplinary traditions. The combination of a competitive stipend, research support, teaching experience, thesis advising and participation in an established academic community makes the fellowship particularly valuable for early-career scholars preparing for academic careers. How to Strengthen the Application Applicants should ensure that the statement of purpose clearly connects their research agenda to moral and political economy and demonstrates why an interdisciplinary environment is important to their work. The writing sample should showcase the applicant’s strongest scholarly contribution, while the CV should clearly present publications, research experience, teaching activities and academic achievements. Applicants should also approach referees early and provide them with sufficient information about the fellowship, research agenda and application deadline to support strong recommendation letters. How to Apply Applications must be submitted online through Interfolio with all required supporting documents and recommendation letters.
