Fellowship Editor – Portuguese-Language OverviewThe Fellowship Editor (Portuguese-Language) will oversee Mongabay’s fellowship programs for Portuguese-speaking journalists. This role involves managing fellows, editing content, and providing mentorship to ensure high editorial standards. The Fellowship Editor will also coordinate with Mongabay’s global editorial team to align fellowship projects with organizational goals and regional coverage priorities. Key Responsibilities Manage and mentor Portuguese-language journalism fellows. Edit stories, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to Mongabay’s editorial guidelines. Oversee the publication process, from pitch to publication. Collaborate with regional editors and contribute to strategic planning of coverage areas. Support professional development opportunities for fellows and emerging writers. Eligibility and Key Requirements Fluency in Portuguese and English (written and spoken). Minimum of five years of experience in journalism, preferably in environmental or science reporting. Strong editorial, mentoring, and communication skills. Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Commitment to Mongabay’s mission of environmental transparency and independent reporting. This position is ideal for an experienced editor passionate about fostering journalistic talent and expanding environmental storytelling across Lusophone regions. Contributing Editor – Ocean Desk OverviewThe Contributing Editor (Ocean Desk) will support Mongabay’s growing coverage of marine ecosystems, ocean conservation, and sustainable coastal livelihoods. Working closely with reporters worldwide, this editor will help shape Mongabay’s ocean reporting strategy and commission in-depth stories on issues such as overfishing, marine biodiversity, pollution, and climate change. Key Responsibilities Edit and commission articles focused on ocean and marine-related topics. Work collaboratively with journalists, researchers, and local correspondents. Ensure editorial accuracy and alignment with Mongabay’s storytelling standards. Contribute to long-term planning and the development of thematic features. Participate in content strategy discussions and ensure global reach of ocean-related stories. Eligibility and Key Requirements Bachelor’s degree or higher in Journalism, Environmental Science, Marine Studies, or a related field. At least five years of professional editorial experience, with a proven record in environmental journalism. Strong understanding of global ocean conservation issues. Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills. Ability to collaborate effectively across time zones and cultures. Engagement Editor OverviewThe Engagement Editor plays a pivotal role in deepening Mongabay’s relationship with readers and strengthening audience participation across digital platforms. This position focuses on optimizing content reach, enhancing reader engagement, and creating opportunities for communities to interact with Mongabay’s reporting. Key Responsibilities Manage digital engagement strategies across Mongabay’s websites and social media platforms. Analyze audience insights and develop creative methods to boost readership. Collaborate with editorial and communications teams to align engagement efforts with ongoing campaigns. Develop newsletters, social media content, and interactive features to support key stories. Build relationships with partner organizations, readers, and advocates to expand Mongabay’s global reach. Eligibility and Key Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field. Minimum of three years’ experience in digital engagement or audience development. Proficiency in content management systems and social media analytics tools. Strong writing, editing, and analytical skills. Demonstrated passion for environmental communication and data-driven storytelling. The Engagement Editor role is ideal for someone who thrives on connecting diverse audiences with impactful environmental reporting through creative, strategic communication. Wire Reporter – Asia OverviewThe Wire Reporter (Asia) will contribute to Mongabay’s fast-paced news coverage by delivering timely, accurate, and impactful stories from across the Asian continent. Reporting on biodiversity, conservation policy, climate issues, and community initiatives, this position is essential for amplifying Asian perspectives on global environmental challenges. Key Responsibilities Produce short, timely news reports for Mongabay’s global audience. Monitor environmental developments across Asia and pitch relevant stories. Collaborate with Mongabay’s editors and multimedia team to provide comprehensive coverage. Uphold accuracy, balance, and ethical reporting standards. Contribute to Mongabay’s regional and thematic storytelling initiatives. Eligibility and Key Requirements At least three years of experience in journalism, preferably covering environmental or development issues in Asia. Proven ability to write clearly and concisely under tight deadlines. Excellent research and fact-checking skills. Familiarity with regional political and ecological contexts.
