WIEGO advances this mission through a combination of research, policy advocacy, and grassroots organizing, ensuring that informal workers gain recognition, rights, and representation in local, national, and global policy arenas. Through its Organization and Representation Programme (ORP), WIEGO strengthens the capacity of informal worker organizations—such as those representing home-based workers, domestic workers, waste pickers, and street vendors—to build collective voice, exercise leadership, and influence policies that affect their livelihoods. As part of its 2025–2026 strategic priorities, WIEGO is deepening its focus on digitalisation and platform work, recognizing the transformative effect of technology on how work is organised, accessed, and valued. About the Role WIEGO is seeking an experienced and visionary Digitalisation and Platform Work Specialist to lead its strategic work at the intersection of technology, labour, and the informal economy. Digitalisation is rapidly reshaping economies, redefining employment models, and creating both opportunities and risks for workers worldwide. For those in the informal economy—who already face limited protections and representation—technological change can either widen inequalities or offer pathways to empowerment. This consultancy role will guide WIEGO’s thought leadership, research, and advocacy in ensuring that digital transformation becomes a tool for equity, inclusion, and worker empowerment. The Specialist will work closely with WIEGO’s partners, allies, and networks across regions, including worker-led organizations, academic institutions, and policy advocates. The consultant will report to the Organization and Representation Programme (ORP) Director, contributing directly to Priority 3.3: Digitalisation and Platform Workers within WIEGO’s strategic plan. Core duties include: Raising awareness about digitalisation and digital labour platforms, including their impacts and opportunities for informal workers. Keeping WIEGO’s partners and stakeholders informed about emerging global trends in the future of work and digital transformation. Developing and implementing a strategic framework on digitalisation and platform work for WIEGO. Supporting the formulation of joint policy positions with WIEGO’s networks and allies—particularly in preparation for international forums such as the International Labour Conference (ILC). Providing analytical support and technical advice to strengthen worker engagement in digital economy discussions. Producing policy briefs, reports, and speeches that enhance understanding of how digital platforms affect informal workers, particularly women. Contributing to international advocacy efforts promoting inclusive and equitable digital labour regulations. Representing WIEGO at global and regional meetings on digitalisation and the future of work. Building and maintaining relationships with key policy institutions and allies, including the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), International Labour Organization (ILO), and other civil society and academic partners. Supporting WIEGO’s fundraising initiatives related to digitalisation and platform work. About You You are a strategic and analytical thinker with deep expertise in the intersection of digital technology, labour, and social justice. You have a proven record of developing and communicating strategies that bridge policy, research, and advocacy to ensure that the voices of workers—especially women in the informal economy—are heard in the digital future of work. Essential Criteria At least 10 years of experience within the labour movement, including international-level advocacy or engagement. Demonstrated expertise in digitalisation, digital labour platforms, and the future of work, reflected in publications, reports, or strategic frameworks.
