globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

August 19, 2026

Description

Activate Rights and the Bangladesh Protest Archive have officially opened applications for the July Witness Fellowship 2026, inviting young journalists, researchers, and documentation practitioners to produce evidence-based reporting on the July 2024 Uprising and related issues of grassroots documentation, archival infrastructure, and public accountability. The fellowship, hosted under the Archive & Resist Fund, aims to support emerging voices by providing mentorship, financial support, and publication opportunities for in-depth investigative articles that preserve historical records and strengthen accountability efforts. Applications are open until 31 July 2026, with interested candidates required to submit a reporting idea via email. About the July Witness Fellowship The July Witness Fellowship is designed to encourage high-quality, evidence-based journalism and research focused on one of Bangladesh’s most significant recent events. The programme seeks to amplify local perspectives by supporting individuals who have access to credible evidence and compelling stories that deserve wider public attention. Rather than requiring extensive publication experience, the fellowship prioritizes strong reporting ideas, reliable documentation, and a clear plan for producing well-researched articles that contribute to historical documentation and accountability. The initiative reflects the Archive & Resist Fund’s broader mission of ensuring that communities closest to important events have the resources needed to preserve evidence and contribute to public discourse. Fellowship Focus Areas Successful applicants will be expected to produce original articles of 2,000 to 3,000 words examining topics connected to the July 2024 Uprising and related themes. Suggested focus areas include: The July 2024 Uprising in Bangladesh. Grassroots documentation initiatives. Archival infrastructure and digital preservation. Human rights documentation. Accountability and justice processes. Community-based evidence collection. Historical memory and public records. Civic participation and democratic accountability. The fellowship encourages thoughtful, evidence-based reporting that contributes to public understanding while preserving valuable historical information. What Fellows Will Receive Selected fellows will receive both financial and professional support throughout the reporting process. Benefits include: Individual mentorship from the Activate Rights and Bangladesh Protest Archive teams. A grant of up to USD 100 for each published article. Publication opportunities through partner media outlets. Editorial guidance during the research and writing process. Access to experienced professionals working in documentation and accountability initiatives. The programme aims to help emerging writers strengthen their reporting skills while producing work that contributes to long-term public records. Who Can Apply? The fellowship is open to young individuals with an interest in journalism, research, and documentation related to Bangladesh. Eligible applicants include: Young journalists. Researchers. Documentation practitioners. Emerging writers with strong reporting ideas. Individuals approximately 18 to 30 years old. Applicants based in Bangladesh or reporting on Bangladesh. Importantly, prior publication experience is not required. Instead, organizers are seeking applicants who can demonstrate: Access to credible evidence or relevant sources. A well-developed reporting idea. A realistic and ethical reporting plan. Commitment to evidence-based journalism and documentation. This approach is intended to create opportunities for new voices that may not yet have an established publishing record but possess valuable local knowledge and research potential. Article Requirements Selected fellows will be expected to produce original long-form articles suitable for publication through partner media organizations. Articles should: Be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. Be based on credible evidence and careful research. Address themes connected to the July 2024 Uprising or related documentation issues. Meet professional editorial standards. Contribute to historical documentation and accountability efforts. The fellowship emphasizes factual reporting and responsible documentation while encouraging thoughtful analysis of complex issues. How to Apply Interested applicants are required to submit a brief reporting idea before the application deadline. Application requirements include: Email a reporting idea to info@activaterights.org. Submit the application no later than 31 July 2026. Await notification if shortlisted. According to the organizers, selected applicants will receive the full submission template and additional guidance before beginning the reporting process. Supporting Documentation and Public Accountability The July Witness Fellowship is part of the broader Archive & Resist Fund, an initiative dedicated to strengthening grassroots documentation and ensuring that important evidence reaches public accountability mechanisms. By investing in young researchers and journalists, the programme seeks to improve access to reliable documentation while helping preserve records that may contribute to future research, advocacy, and public understanding. The fellowship also recognizes the important role that independent reporting and community-led documentation play in protecting historical memory and supporting informed public discussion. Application Deadline Young journalists, researchers, and documentation practitioners interested in producing in-depth reporting on Bangladesh’s July 2024 Uprising and related accountability issues are encouraged to apply before 31 July 2026. With mentorship, editorial support, publication opportunities, and financial assistance, the July Witness Fellowship offers emerging writers a valuable platform to strengthen their investigative reporting skills while contributing meaningful, evidence-based journalism to the public record.
