It is estimated that one in three children worldwide is affected by lead exposure, resulting in lifelong health, cognitive, and economic consequences. LEEP’s primary focus is the elimination of lead paint, a significant source of exposure in low- and middle-income countries. The organisation generates robust data, supports governments in introducing and enforcing lead regulations, and assists paint manufacturers in transitioning to lead-free production. In addition to paint-focused interventions, LEEP is piloting initiatives targeting other sources of lead exposure, including spices and cosmetics. Since its founding in September 2020, LEEP has launched lead paint elimination programmes in 37 countries and completed paint studies in 22. It has collaborated with government agencies in 18 countries to establish regulatory goals and has supported market shifts in 17 countries where manufacturers controlling over 50 percent of market share have reformulated to lead-free paint. Independent evaluations highlight LEEP as one of the most cost-effective global health interventions, with prevention costs estimated as low as USD 1.66 per child exposed. LEEP partners with the World Health Organization and the UN Environment Programme’s Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint and receives support from major donors, including USAID, Founders Pledge, Open Philanthropy, and Schmidt Futures.
