MATS Research has officially opened applications for its Autumn 2026 fellowship cohort, offering researchers and field-builders an opportunity to collaborate with leading experts in artificial intelligence safety, governance, and alignment. The fellowship programme connects selected participants with mentors from globally recognized AI organizations, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Redwood Research, and ARC, among others. The programme is designed to support emerging researchers working on reducing risks associated with frontier artificial intelligence systems while contributing to AI alignment, transparency, governance, and security research. About the MATS Fellowship Programme The MATS programme provides fellows with extensive support to enable full-time focus on impactful AI safety research and field-building activities. Selected fellows receive: Funding support Access to compute resources Housing and meals Research management support Mentorship from leading AI researchers Access to a highly driven global research community The Autumn 2026 programme is scheduled to begin on: 28 September 2026 Research Tracks Available Applicants may apply to one or multiple research tracks during the first stage of the application process. The programme currently supports the following seven tracks: Empirical Research Theory Strategy and Forecasting Policy and Governance Systems Security Founding and Field-Building Biosecurity These tracks are designed to accommodate a wide range of research interests and professional backgrounds connected to AI safety and governance. Stage 1: General Application The first application stage is currently open and will remain available until: 7 June 2026 The general application process typically takes between one and two hours depending on the number of tracks selected by the applicant. Applicants will be required to submit: Personal and academic background information Short responses tailored to selected research tracks Contact details for two references MATS notes that references will not be contacted until later stages of the recruitment process. Returning applicants from the Summer 2026 cohort may log in to pre-fill sections of their applications. Stage 2: Central Evaluations Applicants who successfully pass the initial screening will move to the second stage, which includes standardized evaluations tailored to specific tracks. Assessment Areas Include: Empirical Track Research taste evaluations Technical implementation assessments Policy and Governance Track Writing assessments Analytical reasoning exercises Applicants for some other tracks may proceed directly to the stream application stage. Stage 3: Stream Applications During this phase, applicants apply directly to specific mentor streams aligned with their interests and expertise. Each stream represents one or more mentors working on a shared research agenda. Applicants may be required to: Respond to stream-specific questions Submit research proposals Complete interviews or work tests depending on mentor requirements Final Selection and Offers Following mentor evaluations and applicant rankings, a matching process will determine final fellowship placements. Offer notifications are expected to be released during: Late July to early August 2026 Who Should Apply?
