Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, is an international, independent medical humanitarian organisation providing assistance to populations affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or human-made disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. About MSF Ubuntu MSF Ubuntu is the newest Operational Directorate within Médecins Sans Frontières. Grounded in the philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because we are”—the directorate operates through a blended structure across MSF Eastern Africa and MSF Southern Africa. Key characteristics of MSF Ubuntu include: Strong emphasis on community-centred decision-making Promotion of interdependence and interoperability across operations Focus on sustainable and locally grounded humanitarian outcomes Contribution of innovative operational approaches to the MSF movement Position Purpose The Head of Operational Finance is responsible for defining, leading, and implementing the operational financial framework across MSF Ubuntu’s countries of operation. The position reports hierarchically and functionally to the Director of Finance and plays a critical role in enabling effective, compliant, and risk-aware financial management in support of humanitarian operations. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Develop and implement strategic plans and roadmaps for operational finance Ensure alignment between financial strategy and organisational objectives Define service goals for operational finance and monitor performance Provide strategic guidance and oversight to field finance teams Budgeting and Financial Planning Define budgeting timelines, processes, and terms of reference in coordination with Operations Consolidate, review, and analyse country budgets and budget revisions Identify financial risks, cost drivers, and areas for optimisation Monitor budget execution and analyse trends affecting future planning Produce structured monthly financial reports and dashboards for senior management Cash Management and Treasury Coordination Ensure systems are in place to provide missions with timely and sufficient funding Supervise cash flow monitoring and fund transfers to field operations Oversee the use of transfer channels in line with compliance and risk policies Assess exposure to anti-bribery, anti-terrorism, and sanctions-related risks Internal Control and Financial Risk Management Lead the identification, assessment, and mitigation of financial risks Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, tools, and controls Ensure consistent implementation of internal control frameworks across missions Maintain a structured financial risk management framework for field teams Oversee internal audit processes and monitor remediation actions, subject to resources International Coordination and Representation Participate in international financial working groups and projects Contribute to cross-sectional initiatives within the MSF movement Promote harmonisation of financial systems, tools, and processes People Leadership and Capacity Development Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance management of field finance staff Support professional development in line with MSF HR policies Collaborate with accounting teams to strengthen learning and support frameworks Identify training needs and ensure access to up-to-date learning materials Maintain regular communication with field financial coordinators Safeguarding, Compliance, and Performance Management Integrate safeguarding, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles into finance practices Recognise, report, and document any suspected abuse in line with safeguarding protocols Ensure compliance with data protection legislation and internal policies Support staff training on data protection and compliance requirements Actively participate in individual and team performance management processes Qualifications and Experience Education and Knowledge Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field Master’s degree considered an added advantage Knowledge of MSF financial and business processes Understanding of international and Kenyan accounting standards Professional Experience Minimum of 8 years’ experience in financial management At least 12 months’ experience as an MSF Field Financial Coordinator Proven experience managing consolidated budgets and financial analysis Demonstrated experience in team leadership and coordination Technical and Behavioural Competencies Proficiency in Microsoft 365, ERP systems, and financial reporting tools Strong knowledge of GAAP/IFRS and internal control frameworks Advanced analytical, forecasting, and financial modelling skills Strong leadership, communication, and negotiation abilities Cross-cultural awareness, resilience, and stress management skills Language Requirements Fluency in English (mandatory) Fluency in French (an asset) Contract and Benefits Location: Nairobi, Kenya, or Johannesburg, South Africa Contract Type: Full-time, three-year renewable contract Start Date: April 2026 Compensation: In line with MSF reward policies and local conditions Benefits may include: Competitive salary and pension contributions Comprehensive medical and disability insurance Annual leave and additional leave entitlements Flexible working arrangements and remote work options Learning, training, and career development opportunities International mobility and relocation support, where applicable Application Process Closing Date: 14 January 2026 Open to local and international applicants Submission of a combined PDF (motivation letter and CV in English) is required Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted MSF is an equal opportunity employer and does not charge any recruitment or application fees.
