Mercy Corps is seeking a strategic and performance-driven leader to serve as Director of Acquisition and Growth. This full-time, exempt position is U.S.-based with a flexible home office arrangement and offers a starting salary range of $90,000 to $120,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Position Overview The Director of Acquisition and Growth is responsible for building and scaling Mercy Corps’ mass market donor acquisition strategy across the U.S. market. The position addresses a core organizational priority: Replacing and expanding the donor file Increasing acquisition investment Improving donor quality and long-term value Transitioning toward a majority monthly donor base over the next 5–10 years Reporting to the Senior Director of Mass Market Fundraising, this leader oversees strategy, financial management, forecasting, and performance for all acquisition initiatives. Core Responsibilities Acquisition Strategy & Growth Leadership The Director will: Lead acquisition across online and offline channels, including: Digital acquisition Direct mail Performance marketing Emerging channels such as face-to-face fundraising Design and scale a monthly donor acquisition program focused on sustainable value, not short-term volume Diversify acquisition channels to reduce risk and expand reach Align acquisition and retention strategies in partnership with the Director of Retention & Loyalty Translate organizational growth goals into measurable acquisition plans Digital acquisition is expected to be a primary growth driver, integrated with offline strategies for a comprehensive portfolio approach. Performance, Analytics & Financial Management Serving as the business lead for acquisition investments, the Director will: Manage expense and revenue budgets, including forecasting and reforecasting Lead data-driven investment decisions based on: Cost to acquire First-year value Long-term return on investment Lifetime value metrics Establish performance frameworks prioritizing donor quality and retention outcomes Partner with analytics, operations, and agency teams to enhance segmentation and targeting Use testing and data insights to continuously optimize acquisition performance Cross-Functional Leadership The role requires strong collaboration across departments. Key partnerships include: Brand Marketing for website funnel optimization and digital experience Communications and Development Operations Analytics teams and external agencies The Director will represent Mass Market Fundraising in strategic growth and awareness discussions while ensuring accountability among vendors and partners. Team & Function Building As Mercy Corps scales its acquisition efforts, this role will: Architect the future acquisition function Identify when additional staffing is required Hire and manage acquisition-focused team members Foster a culture of performance, accountability, and innovation Although the position currently has no direct supervisory responsibilities, it is expected to evolve as investment and complexity increase. Qualifications & Experience Candidates must demonstrate: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with 6+ years of mass market fundraising experience Proven leadership in donor acquisition at scale Deep expertise in digital acquisition and performance marketing Experience managing multi-channel programs Success in building and scaling monthly donor programs Strong financial acumen and budget oversight experience Familiarity with evolving marketing technology and data environments Cross-functional collaboration skills Commitment to humanitarian, mission-driven work Prior people management experience Work Environment & Travel This position may be remote or hybrid from Mercy Corps headquarters in Portland, Oregon or Washington, D.C. Travel up to 25% may be required for donor meetings, conferences, and team workshops.
