The Migration, Time and Transformations in Europe (MITIME) programme is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network funded under the EU Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement No. 101226734). MITIME is recruiting 15 Doctoral Researchers across leading European universities and partner institutions to investigate migration, temporality, labour, urban life, governance, and belonging in post-industrial cities. Applicants are strongly advised to carefully review the Recruitment Overview, Selection Criteria, and the MITIME programme’s thematic and training framework prior to applying. General Eligibility and Conditions All positions are fully funded doctoral appointments under MSCA regulations and are subject to the following overarching eligibility requirements: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) relevant to the discipline by the required institutional deadlines. Applicants must not hold a PhD at the time of recruitment. Applicants must comply with the MSCA mobility rule, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the host country for more than 12 months in the 36 months preceding recruitment. Strong English proficiency is mandatory; additional language skills relevant to the field sites are considered a strong asset. Demonstrated interest or experience in qualitative, ethnographic, mixed, or comparative research methods is expected. The official PhD start date is generally 1 October 2026, depending on host institution regulations. Salaries, mobility allowances, and benefits are provided in line with MSCA Doctoral Network funding rules and host-country employment frameworks. Overview of Doctoral Research Positions Doctoral Researchers 1, 3, 6, and 11 Host Institution: University of Oulu, FinlandDiscipline: Cultural Anthropology These projects examine conviviality, urban sociality, belonging, and institutional temporalities in post-industrial cities. Research focuses on ethnographic fieldwork in Finland, Germany, Belgium, and Ireland, combining qualitative methods with participatory and policy-oriented approaches. Key Requirements: Background in anthropology or closely related fields Experience or training in qualitative and ethnographic research English proficiency; Finnish, German, or French considered an asset Secondments: Ruhr-University Bochum, University of Liège, City of Oulu, University College Cork Doctoral Researchers 2 and 15 Host Institution: Koç University, TürkiyeDiscipline: Sociology or Political Science These projects explore remote work, international mobility, legal status, and temporalities of belonging, focusing on migrant labour, governance, and future-making. Key Requirements: Admission eligibility for Koç University PhD programmes Interest in migration, labour, law, or governance Turkish language skills advantageous but not mandatory Additional Information:An optional additional year of funding may be offered by Koç University following the MSCA period (without mobility allowances). Secondments: University of Deusto, ICMPD Istanbul, GERNIKA (Bilbao) Doctoral Researchers 4 and 5 Host Institution: Ruhr-University Bochum, GermanyDiscipline: Social Sciences These projects analyse urban labour markets, migrant precarity, and labour governance, focusing on temporal regimes, institutional actors, and migrant resilience strategies. Key Requirements: Master’s degree certificate must be presented by 15 April 2026 Familiarity with qualitative research methods Relevant language skills for fieldwork advantageous Employment Conditions:Positions are salaried under TV-L E13 (German public service pay scale). Secondments: Koç University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, regional labour administrations Doctoral Researchers 7 and 8 Host Institution: University College Cork (UCC), IrelandDiscipline: Sociology / Social Sciences These projects investigate placemaking, borderscapes, forced migration, and migrant resistance, using participatory, mobile, and creative methodologies. Key Requirements: Honours primary degree (NFQ Level 8) with minimum 2H1 Compliance with UCC English language requirements Backgrounds in migration studies, sociology, geography, or policy studies encouraged Secondments: Cork Migrant Centre, Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Oulu, INTERSOS (Greece) Doctoral Researchers 9 and 10 Host Institution: University of Deusto, SpainDiscipline: Human Rights / Political and Social Sciences These projects focus on diasporic identities, urban narratives, displacement, memory, and belonging in post-industrial cities, particularly Bilbao. Key Requirements: Minimum 300 ECTS credits (Bachelor’s + Master’s) Proficiency in English and Spanish Strong qualitative and ethnographic skills Secondments: University College Cork, University of Oulu, UNESCO Etxea Doctoral Researchers 12 and 13 Host Institution: University of Liège, BelgiumDiscipline: Political and Social Sciences These projects examine migration narratives, borders, access to rights, and urban policymaking, employing participatory and comparative approaches. Key Requirements: Master’s degree with distinction Proficiency in French required or strongly preferred Commitment to completing 60 ECTS doctoral training credits Additional Information:An optional one-year institutional extension may be offered after the MSCA period. Secondments: Théâtre de Liège, Koç University, CRIPEL, Erasmus University Rotterdam Doctoral Researcher 14 Host Institution: Erasmus University Rotterdam, NetherlandsDiscipline: Public Administration / Governance This project analyses the governance of migration temporalities, focusing on policy design, access to rights, and migrant mobility in Rotterdam and Bilbao. Key Requirements: Strong background in public policy or governance Proficiency in English; working knowledge of Dutch and Spanish Experience with comparative qualitative research Funding Duration: 4 years, with final year covered by Erasmus University Rotterdam Secondment: University of Deusto Application Process and Deadlines Applications must be submitted online via the MITIME website using the individual “Apply for this position” links.
