The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) has announced a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Internship opportunity as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen evidence-based policymaking and development practice across Africa. Established in 2010, AFIDEP operates across Kenya, Malawi, and the United States, focusing on bridging the gap between research, policy, and practice to enhance development outcomes. About AFIDEP and Its Mission AFIDEP works to institutionalize a culture of evidence-informed decision-making in Africa’s development landscape. Its mission is to strengthen governance systems, improve resource allocation, and support the design and implementation of effective development interventions. The institute’s work is structured around five core thematic areas: Population dynamics and demographic dividend Health and wellbeing Transformative education and skills development Environment and climate change Governance and accountability Through research, advocacy, and capacity building, AFIDEP aims to support sustainable development and strengthen institutional accountability across African countries. Role Overview: Monitoring & Evaluation Intern The M&E Intern will support the implementation of AFIDEP’s institutional Monitoring and Evaluation framework. This role is designed to strengthen data-driven decision-making by assisting in the collection, analysis, and reporting of data across projects, programmes, and internal departments. The internship is a fixed-term position that contributes directly to tracking institutional performance against strategic objectives. Key Responsibilities The M&E Intern will contribute to several core functional areas within the institute’s monitoring and evaluation system. Data Collection and Management The intern will support data-driven institutional processes by: Assisting in the collection of M&E data across thematic programmes and projects Ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and integrity Supporting structured data management across institutional systems Contributing to tracking progress against strategic objectives Data Analysis and Reporting A key component of the role involves supporting data analysis and reporting functions, including: Assisting in analysing quantitative and qualitative data Tracking programme and project performance indicators Supporting the drafting of institutional reports Ensuring clarity and coherence in reporting outcomes and impacts These tasks ensure that AFIDEP’s programmes are continuously assessed and aligned with institutional goals. Systems and Performance Tracking The intern will also support the use of institutional systems for monitoring performance, including: Updating reporting matrices within the organisation’s ERP system Assisting in tracking project progress across departments Supporting the consolidation of performance data for reporting purposes Additional Support Functions The role includes flexible responsibilities such as: Supporting cross-programme M&E activities Contributing to internal learning and documentation processes Performing additional tasks assigned by supervisors Required Qualifications and Skills The internship is targeted at highly qualified candidates with strong academic and analytical backgrounds in monitoring and evaluation or related disciplines. Academic Requirements Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in one of the following or related fields: Monitoring and Evaluation Development Studies Statistics Economics Related social science disciplines Key Skills and Competencies Candidates are expected to demonstrate: Strong analytical and data interpretation skills Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to manage multiple tasks independently Strong attention to detail and accuracy in reporting Familiarity with ERP systems for data management (an advantage) Commitment to AFIDEP’s mission and values Organisational Focus and Impact AFIDEP’s Monitoring and Evaluation Intern role contributes to a broader institutional goal of strengthening evidence-based development across Africa. The institute’s work spans critical development sectors, including health, education, climate change, governance, and population dynamics. The M&E function is central to ensuring that interventions in these areas are measurable, impactful, and responsive to real-world challenges.
