The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) in Bergen, Norway, is inviting applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Climate Reanalysis, starting on 1 March 2027. The position offers researchers an opportunity to contribute to advanced climate science by combining artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and physics-based modelling to improve long-term climate reconstructions. The fellowship is linked to the European Union-funded CLIMATE_NEXT project, which aims to develop AI- and machine-learning-enhanced methods that reduce the computational costs of climate reanalysis while improving accuracy, physical consistency and the use of observational data. The successful candidate will help develop a hybrid AI-physics version of the Norwegian Climate Prediction Model (NorCPM), working alongside researchers at NERSC and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. Applications are open to qualified researchers with doctoral-level expertise in climate science, meteorology, oceanography, applied mathematics or related disciplines. Postdoctoral Fellowship Overview Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Climate Reanalysis Employer: Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) Location: Bergen, Norway Workplace: Jahnebakken 3, 5007 Bergen Duration: Three years Employment type: Full-time engagement Starting date: 1 March 2027 Application deadline: 27 October 2026 Salary: According to qualifications; no specific amount stated in the advertisement Research areas: Climate reanalysis, data assimilation, machine learning, AI and climate modelling Application method: Online application through Jobbnorge About the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center Established in Bergen in 1986, NERSC is a Norwegian environmental research institute specialising in the physical and biological conditions of ocean environments, particularly in the Arctic and surrounding regions. The centre conducts research and development to improve understanding and prediction of global climate change. Its international workforce and collaborations contribute to climate modelling, environmental forecasting and research addressing major societal challenges. NERSC has extensive expertise in data assimilation and climate prediction. Its work on the Norwegian Climate Prediction Model supports international research initiatives, including the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project and the development of decadal climate prediction services. The successful fellow will join the Climate Dynamics and Prediction group and collaborate with the NorCPM developer team at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. About the Research Project The position is associated with CLIMATE_NEXT, an EU project scheduled to begin on 1 March 2027. The project aims to improve climate reanalysis by developing AI- and machine-learning-enhanced methods that make computational processes more efficient without compromising the physical consistency of reconstructed climate records. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a hybrid version of NorCPM that combines a dynamical Earth system model with machine-learning forecasting systems, potentially including approaches such as GraphCast and GLONET. The work will focus on developing methods for long coupled climate reanalysis, helping scientists reconstruct past climate conditions and improve understanding of long-term climate variability. The role provides an opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of climate science, numerical modelling, data assimilation and artificial intelligence. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will contribute to the development and advancement of the hybrid AI-physics climate modelling system. Expected research activities include: Developing an AI-physics version of the Norwegian Climate Prediction Model. Combining Earth system modelling with machine-learning forecasting methods. Contributing to long coupled climate reanalysis. Applying data assimilation methods to improve the integration of observations into climate models. Analysing climate data and evaluating model performance. Collaborating with researchers at NERSC and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. Contributing to international research collaboration and the scientific objectives of CLIMATE_NEXT. The position is intended to strengthen the fellow’s research expertise and prepare them for a future scientific career within or beyond academia. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet the following essential requirements: Doctoral qualification: A degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in climate science, meteorology, oceanography, applied mathematics or a closely related field. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation by the application deadline. Employment requires an approved doctoral thesis and successful defence. Programming and data analysis: Strong programming skills are required, including experience with programming languages such as Fortran, shell scripting and data analysis software such as Python, MATLAB or R. English proficiency: Applicants must have excellent spoken and written English skills equivalent to C1 Advanced level. The following experience will be considered an advantage: Climate modelling and climate simulations, particularly climate reanalysis. Ensemble-based data assimilation, especially the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF). Machine learning and AI-based forecasting. Climate dynamics or climate prediction. Candidates should also demonstrate initiative, structured working habits, problem-solving ability, effective teamwork and strong scientific communication skills. Salary and Employment Benefits NERSC offers a full-time, three-year research appointment in an international scientific environment. Benefits outlined in the vacancy include: Challenging research tasks in a recognised centre of expertise. An international and collaborative working environment. Opportunities for professional development and career progression. Good pension schemes. Flexible working hours. Salary determined according to qualifications. The advertisement does not provide a fixed salary figure. Applicants should consult the employer for further information about remuneration and applicable employment conditions. Please note that Norwegian regulations concerning export control, national security and sanctions may affect the employment process. How to Apply Applications must be submitted electronically through the Jobbnorge vacancy page. Applicants should prepare a current CV containing contact information and provide two contact references, as specified in the advertisement. Candidates should ensure that their academic qualifications, programming experience and relevant research expertise are clearly presented. To apply: Review the complete vacancy announcement on Jobbnorge. Confirm that the doctoral qualification and technical requirements are met. Prepare a detailed CV highlighting relevant experience in climate modelling, data assimilation, machine learning or related fields. Include contact details for two references. Submit the application using the “Apply for this job” option on the official vacancy page. How to Strengthen Your Application Applicants should demonstrate how their previous research prepares them to work across climate modelling, data assimilation and machine learning. Evidence of programming proficiency, experience with large scientific datasets and contributions to climate simulations or forecasting research may strengthen an application. Candidates should also explain their specific technical contributions to previous projects and show how their expertise could support the development of computationally efficient and physically consistent climate reanalysis methods. Application Deadline The deadline is 27 October 2026. The successful candidate is expected to start on 1 March 2027. The employer notes that applications may be assessed and candidates contacted before the deadline, so interested researchers should consider applying early.
