Role Overview The Senior Manager, Storytelling Grants & Programs serves as a strategic and operational leader within the Storytelling division. Reporting to the Deputy to the Chief Storytelling Officer & VP, Grants & Programs, this role is responsible for day-to-day design, coordination, and execution of a portfolio of storytelling programs. These programs may include Storytelling Capacity Building initiatives, Polaris and Azimuth-level programs, and other high-impact storytelling investments. The Senior Manager ensures programmatic excellence, manages partnerships, develops workplans, and supports strategic alignment across departments. This role is central to nurturing new storytelling talent while also supporting experienced photographers, writers, filmmakers, data visualization specialists, audio producers, and digital creatives. Additionally, the Senior Manager contributes to organization-wide strategic priorities, ensuring the needs of storytellers are embedded into the overall NG Next strategy. Key Responsibilities Program Planning, Execution & Communication (35%) The Senior Manager leads the development and implementation of storytelling program strategies. Responsibilities include designing workflows, managing timelines, coordinating program deliverables, and ensuring seamless communication across teams. They oversee the lifecycle of storytelling initiatives to ensure they remain aligned with program goals and organizational strategy. Operational Leadership for Storytelling Grants & Programs (35%) A major component of the role involves managing operational processes related to grants and program administration. This includes coordinating contracts, processing vendor payments, managing expense reports, and arranging travel logistics or visa support for staff and contractors. The Senior Manager ensures operational efficiency and consistent adherence to organizational and financial policies. Research & Strategic Analysis (10%) The Senior Manager collaborates with members of the Storytelling team on research and analytical projects that guide decision-making. This may include evaluating industry trends, reviewing program outcomes, and contributing insights that strengthen strategy development, funding decisions, and long-term planning. Marketing & Communications Support (10%) The Senior Manager contributes to the development of communication materials, presentations, and promotional assets that increase visibility for storytelling programs. This may include preparing decks, writing program summaries, or supporting creative campaigns targeting internal and external audiences. Cross-Divisional Coordination (10%) This role works closely with teams across NGS, National Geographic Partners (NGP), regional offices, and external organizations to ensure alignment on cross-divisional storytelling initiatives. The Senior Manager represents the Storytelling division in collaborative projects and helps integrate storytelling perspectives into organization-wide strategies. Qualifications & Experience Education A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field is helpful but not required. Professional Experience Candidates must have at least seven years of project management experience, with a strong track record of coordinating complex workstreams. Experience in editorial, media, or creative environments is beneficial though not mandatory. The role requires strong writing skills, excellent communication abilities, and proven experience managing multiple initiatives simultaneously. Skills & Competencies Strong project management capabilities Exceptional organizational skills Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication Collaborative mindset and ability to work cross-functionally Self-motivation combined with analytical curiosity High proficiency in Microsoft Office and Keynote Experience working with photographic or video assets is an advantage Experience designing presentations or coordinating multimedia projects is preferred Compensation & Benefits The National Geographic Society provides a competitive salary range of $93,100–$98,000, depending on experience, skill level, and organizational considerations. Work Model & Eligibility This is a Hybrid position requiring staff to work on-site in Washington, D.C. two days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
