The National University of Singapore (NUS) Asia Research Institute (ARI) has opened applications for a full-time Postdoctoral/Research Fellow position focusing on ageing and migration. The fellowship is linked to a four-year research project funded by the Social Sciences Research Council Singapore under its Thematic Grant programme. The project, titled Ageing Futures and Resource Environments of Foreign-born Singapore Residents, examines how older migrants develop and use formal and informal support systems in Singapore and across borders. The successful candidate will initially be appointed for one year, with the possibility of renewal into a second year. The expected start date is October 2026, and the successful applicant must commence no later than December 2026. The application deadline is 14 August 2026. Research Project on Ageing and Migration The research project examines the intersection between ageing and migration, two major life-course transitions that can involve significant adaptation and uncertainty. Researchers will investigate the resource environments of foreign-born older adults, including the formal and informal support systems they establish locally and transnationally. The project will also examine the role of digital connectivity and compare foreign-born and local-born older adults to understand how different resource environments influence: • Belonging and social participation. • Access to opportunities. • Social networks. • Healthcare. • Eldercare. • Productive ageing. • Digital inclusion. • Long-term integration. The research is expected to contribute to academic understanding of the ageing-migration relationship while also informing policy responses concerning ageing, healthcare, eldercare and integration. Responsibilities of the Research Fellow The successful candidate will primarily conduct qualitative research in Singapore involving foreign-born residents aged 55 years and above who originate from different countries in Asia. The researcher will work as part of a mixed-methods and interdisciplinary team and will collaborate with researchers from different academic backgrounds. Key responsibilities include: • Conducting qualitative fieldwork, including interviews and observations. • Analysing research findings in collaboration with interdisciplinary researchers. • Contributing to academic publications and research outputs. • Supporting dissemination activities for academic and non-academic audiences. • Presenting research findings at international and domestic conferences. • Contributing to publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. • Participating in project meetings, workshops and seminars. • Supporting grant applications and other research activities. The successful researcher will be hosted within the ARI Migration and Mobilities Cluster and will work with Principal Investigator Professor Elaine Ho and an interdisciplinary team of co-investigators. Eligibility Requirements Applicants are expected to have a strong academic and research background relevant to the project. Candidates should: • Hold a PhD, or be awaiting conferment, in the Social Sciences and Humanities. • Preferably have a background in Social Geography, Sociology, Anthropology or Migration Studies. • Demonstrate research interests related to ageing, migration or the themes addressed by the project. • Have strong qualitative research skills. • Have mixed-methods research experience, which will be considered an advantage. • Demonstrate potential to develop a publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. • Have strong written and spoken communication skills. • Demonstrate strong academic writing abilities. • Possess interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment. Language Skills Because the position involves community-based fieldwork and interviews, candidates must have conversational proficiency in at least one language central to the research project. Relevant languages include: • Hindi • Tamil • Bengali • Tagalog • Bahasa Indonesian • Vietnamese Candidates with relevant language skills may therefore be particularly well positioned to undertake the project’s qualitative fieldwork. Salary and Employment Benefits The successful applicant will receive an all-inclusive fixed monthly salary of S$6,000 to S$6,500, depending on experience. The salary includes stipends for housing and living expenses.
