globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

December 30, 2025

Description

The NATO International Staff in Brussels is seeking a Space Capabilities Officer to support strategic development within the Defence Industry, Innovation and Armaments Division (D2IA). This role contributes to advancing NATO’s space capabilities, strengthening commercial integration, and supporting multinational cooperation in an increasingly complex security environment. The position sits within the Armaments and Major Capability Programmes (AMCP) Directorate, which plays a central role in helping Allies deliver interoperable defence capabilities aligned with NATO’s long-term deterrence and defence posture. Role Overview The Space Capabilities Officer works under the leadership of the head of the Space Section and plays a significant role in developing and integrating space capabilities across the Alliance. The Space Section leads the implementation of NATO’s first Commercial Space Strategy, released at the 2025 Summit in The Hague, and serves as the principal entity for political-level commercial engagement in the space domain. The incumbent helps link new trends in space technology with NATO’s operational requirements, supports the development of coherent NATO space architectures, and shapes decision-making through expertise, advisory support and coordination across Allied and commercial stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Policy Development The role supports the evolution of NATO policy on space capability development and commercial integration. This includes advancing the Commercial Space Strategy, designing frameworks for access to commercial space services, and developing mechanisms for threat information sharing across the Alliance. The officer contributes to shaping long-term approaches that reinforce NATO’s technological edge. Expertise and Advisory Support The officer works with Allies, NATO entities and industry partners to support the delivery of space capabilities that enhance operational readiness. Duties include preparing briefs, reports, speeches and policy papers for senior leadership, enabling informed dialogue on emerging space issues. The position requires engagement with political, technological and market developments that influence the space domain. Project Management The post holder collaborates with NATO bodies to establish political and military conditions that support effective project management. Responsibilities include identifying risks, coordinating on capability delivery initiatives and supporting pilot projects emerging from the Commercial Space Strategy. This involves contributing to the development of the NATO Space Front Door, new procurement pathways, and mechanisms enabling commercial participation in exercises and demonstrations. Stakeholder Engagement Strong stakeholder management is essential. The officer maintains networks across NATO, national delegations, military and civilian space agencies, academia, international organisations and industry partners. This outreach promotes NATO’s work in space capability development and encourages dialogue within the space industrial ecosystem, including through platforms such as the SPACENET group. Knowledge Management The role ensures effective communication and knowledge sharing across NATO’s space enterprise. This includes preparing reports, meeting minutes, and briefings, as well as organising training and information sessions for NATO staff and national delegations. Engagement with scientists and industry experts supports the continuous development of NATO’s space-related competencies. Financial Oversight Where applicable, the officer collaborates with the NATO Office of Resources, Nations and relevant agencies to ensure proper use of funds dedicated to space capability development and implementation of the Commercial Space Strategy. Representation The officer represents the Space Section at conferences, symposia and internal meetings. This includes contributing to strategic communications efforts that highlight the relevance of space to Allied security, economies and societal resilience. Required Qualifications and Competencies Candidates must hold a university degree from a recognised institution and have at least two years of relevant experience in space capability development. They should possess strong analytical and communication skills, be capable of operating independently, and demonstrate an advanced command of one of NATO’s official languages. Experience in multilateral or multicultural environments is essential. Desirable qualifications include expertise in economics or space engineering, experience in international armaments cooperation and familiarity with private-sector space actors. The role requires strong competencies in analytical thinking, flexibility, impact and influence, initiative, organisational awareness and teamwork. Contract Details This is a three-year, definite-duration contract with the possibility of renewal for up to three additional years, with a maximum of six years in the post. Conversion to an indefinite contract may be considered under specific conditions. Applicants must be nationals of NATO member states and will be subject to security clearance and verification checks. NATO maintains a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, accessibility and integrity, and encourages applications from qualified individuals across the Alliance.
