The Policy and Advocacy Manager will support the Executive Director in developing and executing a robust policy and advocacy programme that advances conservation of priority species, sites, and habitats in line with Nature Kenya’s Strategic Plan. The role focuses on promoting ecological sustainability, safeguarding Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), and strengthening national and global conservation influence through evidence-based advocacy, partnerships, and policy engagement. Key Responsibilities 1. Policy Development and Strategic AdvocacyThe Policy and Advocacy Manager will lead initiatives that translate scientific research into actionable policy recommendations. They will analyze, influence, and promote legislation, institutional frameworks, and development strategies that embed biodiversity and sustainability into key economic sectors, including agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and water. The role involves mainstreaming biodiversity concerns into development models and promoting sustainable production systems that balance ecological integrity with human well-being. In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Manager will represent Nature Kenya at national and international policy fora, including those linked to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UNFCCC, AEWA, and CITES. The position requires consistent engagement with government, private sector, and civil society to foster stronger environmental governance and accountability. 2. Campaigns, Communication, and Public EngagementThe Manager will coordinate and lead national campaigns to protect KBAs and species under threat. This includes lobbying decision-makers, developers, and communities to adopt biodiversity-friendly policies and practices. A core duty is to enhance public understanding of the value of biodiversity through communication, education, and awareness programmes. The role involves managing advocacy communication across Nature Kenya’s platforms, preparing media content, and ensuring consistent visibility of conservation issues. The Manager will also oversee Nature Kenya’s participation in key environmental events such as World Wetlands Day, World Environment Day, and World Migratory Bird Day, using these platforms to promote advocacy and mobilize support for biodiversity conservation. 3. Partnerships and Stakeholder EngagementCentral to this position is building and strengthening networks with Site Support Groups (SSGs), national institutions, policymakers, and other conservation stakeholders. The Manager will empower local communities and grassroots organisations to lead advocacy at site level and ensure their effective participation in conservation decision-making. The incumbent will coordinate Nature Kenya’s Environmental Legislation and Policy Working Group and the Key Biodiversity Areas National Liaison Committee for Kenya. They will also ensure that stakeholder databases and advocacy strategies remain current and responsive to emerging conservation challenges. 4. Research and Knowledge ApplicationThe Manager will lead policy-relevant research and generate evidence to inform advocacy and decision-making. They will link biodiversity science with socioeconomic outcomes, highlighting how ecosystem health supports human well-being. By integrating biodiversity data into spatial and land-use planning, they will help shape sustainable development pathways that minimize ecological harm. Research outputs—including policy briefs, analytical reports, and knowledge products—will be used to influence government and private-sector policies and to promote sustainable management of natural resources. 5. Programme Management and ReportingThe Manager will ensure efficient implementation of advocacy and conservation projects, aligning activities with donor and organizational requirements. Responsibilities include preparing workplans, budgets, and progress reports; supervising project staff; and ensuring accountability for results and resources. They will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the Species and Sites Manager, Local Empowerment Manager, Finance Manager, and other conservation staff to ensure synergy and cross-programme collaboration. 6. Fundraising and Resource MobilizationResource mobilization is a critical component of this role. The Manager will identify potential donors, develop proposals, and engage corporate partners and philanthropic supporters in biodiversity conservation. They will ensure advocacy and staff costs are integrated into funding proposals and explore partnerships that sustain Nature Kenya’s advocacy programmes. 7. Representation and Institutional StrengtheningThe Policy and Advocacy Manager will serve as the focal point for Nature Kenya’s advocacy initiatives, ensuring consistent representation in policy dialogues and conservation forums. They will work to expand Nature Kenya’s influence and credibility as a national leader in biodiversity conservation. An important part of the mandate is to strengthen the national constituency of institutions and individuals supporting Nature Kenya’s mission. The Manager will ensure that Nature Kenya’s conservation work is effectively documented, disseminated, and integrated into relevant policy processes, securing its place as a key voice for biodiversity in Kenya.
