Netflix, one of the world’s leading entertainment services with over 300 million members across more than 190 countries, is seeking PhD students for its 2026 Machine Learning/AI Scientist Internship program. The internship offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge research and applied machine learning projects across a variety of domains, embedded fully within Netflix teams. About the Internship The Netflix Machine Learning Research team advances innovation across the company, focusing on areas such as personalization algorithms, recommender systems, member and content understanding, creative tooling, system optimization, and robust ML infrastructure. Research spans multiple areas, including: Recommender Systems & Personalization: Transformers/LLMs for recommendations, collaborative filtering, hybrid systems, conversational recommenders. Natural Language Processing (NLP): Large language models, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, text generation, embeddings, alignment, and evaluation. Reinforcement Learning (RL): Offline/online RL, human-feedback learning, bandit algorithms, alignment, and post-training optimization. Computer Vision & Graphics: Image/video understanding, generation, 3D modeling, neural rendering, and animation. Reliable & Causal ML: Robustness, explainability, interpretability, causal inference, policy learning, and counterfactual analysis. Agentic & Multimodal AI: Autonomous systems, tool use, memory and goal management, multimodal data integration (text, image, video, audio). ML Optimization & Infrastructure: Model efficiency, distributed training, end-to-end ML pipelines, and scalable compute environments. Interns may be evaluated for placement in teams across Content, Choosing & Conversation, Commerce, or AI for Member Systems, depending on skill alignment and interests. Eligibility and Qualifications Candidates should be: Currently enrolled in a PhD programme in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computational Biology, Physics, Cognitive Science, or a related field. Experienced with at least one programming language (Python, Java, Scala, C/C++), and familiar with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras). Knowledgeable in distributed training, inference paradigms, or end-to-end ML pipelines. Curious, self-motivated, and capable of solving open-ended ML challenges with strong oral and written communication skills. Nice-to-have skills: distributed computing frameworks (Spark, Presto), and familiarity with software engineering best practices such as version control, testing, and code review. Program Structure and Benefits Duration: Minimum 12 weeks, with start dates in January, May, or June 2026, aligning with academic calendars. Location: Los Gatos, CA (headquarters), with limited opportunities in Los Angeles or New York. Compensation: Competitive, typically $40–$85/hour based on role, skills, experience, and location. Interns gain a fully immersive experience, working closely with Netflix researchers and engineers on real-world projects, mirroring the full-time work environment. Application Process Applicants must submit a CV/resume including contact information, relevant coursework, publications (if any), and a short statement describing their research interests and relevance to Netflix Research. After submission, candidates will receive an Airtable form to complete; only submissions with the form will be considered complete. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is strongly encouraged. Conversion or return offers depend on business needs and headcount but are not guaranteed.
