Location: The Hague, NetherlandsContract: Fixed-term, with prospect of extensionWorking hours: 32–40 hours per week The Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) is seeking an experienced and highly organised Project Coordinator to support its growing Water, Climate and Nature (WCN) portfolio within the International Assistance division. This role is based in The Hague and plays a critical part in ensuring the effective operational, financial, and administrative management of international WCN projects. NLRC works to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable people exposed to disasters, climate risks, and crisis situations, responding before, during, and after emergencies. Guided by the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, NLRC delivers humanitarian assistance without discrimination and with a strong focus on dignity, neutrality, and impact. About the Role Water, Climate and Nature has been identified as a priority technical domain in NLRC’s revised International Strategy. The WCN team supports Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies worldwide and contributes to IFRC and ICRC networks, focusing on: Climate resilience Nature-based solutions Water security Sustainable WASH systems The Project Coordinator ensures that WCN projects for which the unit is budget holder are delivered smoothly, compliantly, and efficiently. By managing operational processes and coordination, the role enables technical specialists to focus on content and innovation while strengthening portfolio-level coherence, accountability, and collaboration. Working Environment The position is embedded within the Water, Climate & Environment (WCE) team, which supports locally led, data-driven water action across emergency preparedness, response, and long-term resilience building. The Project Coordinator reports to the WCE Unit Lead and works closely with: Approximately 10 technical advisors (water engineers, public health specialists, behavioural change experts, and protection, gender and inclusion specialists) Country teams Finance, PMEAL, and Quality teams Although the team is geographically decentralised across Europe and Africa, it operates as a close-knit and collaborative unit with strong shared values and purpose. Key Responsibilities Project and Portfolio Coordination Coordinate operational, administrative, and financial management of WCN projects where the unit is budget holder. Support budget development, monitor expenditure, and flag variances, delays, and reallocation needs. Maintain a clear overview of project progress, risks, bottlenecks, and mitigation measures across the WCN portfolio. Product and Service Portfolio Management Coordinate development and maintenance of the WCN product and service portfolio in collaboration with technical specialists and the unit lead. Ensure alignment with NLRC’s international strategy and promote effective use by country teams and partners. Identify synergies and opportunities for integration across WCN products and services. Collaboration and Internal Coordination Facilitate effective collaboration between WCE experts and NLRC country teams. Ensure WCN activities are well planned, budgeted, and implemented in line with internal policies and ways of working. Promote teamwork and information sharing within the WCN unit and across the International Department. Reporting, Quality, and Compliance Coordinate reporting, monitoring, and quality assurance processes in close collaboration with PMEAL, Finance, and Quality teams. Maintain a monitoring mission calendar for key countries. Ensure compliance with NLRC policies, donor regulations, and risk management standards. Knowledge Management and Communication Ensure project documentation, contracts, and financial files are complete, accurate, and properly archived. Contribute to WCN knowledge products, case studies, and documentation of best practices. Support internal communication through newsletters and content for NLRC’s international website. Profile and Experience Required The ideal candidate is a structured and diplomatic coordinator who can navigate complex international and country-team dynamics while ensuring compliance and quality. Required Qualifications and Experience Relevant academic background (e.g. social sciences, development studies, communication, public health). At least five years of experience in project or product coordination roles. Strong knowledge of project cycle management, financial monitoring, reporting, and compliance. Proven experience within humanitarian organisations (experience with Red Cross or Red Crescent National Societies is an asset). Experience working remotely with diverse, multicultural teams. Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder partnerships or inter-unit initiatives. Fluency in English and good working-level Dutch; French is an asset. Salary within Scale 11 (Project Coordinator III): €3,869.44 to €5,424.14 gross per month (full-time).
