UK South Africa Consortium for Women’s Economic Empowerment A new funding opportunity has been announced to support women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment in South Africa’s higher education sector. Going Global Partnerships is offering a grant of £60,000 to establish a UK South Africa consortium that will design and implement capability strengthening initiatives under the Student Women Economic Empowerment Programme SWEEP. The call was published on 13 November 2025 and closes on 10 December 2025. Purpose of the Grant the UK-South Africa Funding The grant aims to strengthen entrepreneurship support structures for female university students across South Africa. The selected consortium will work within the existing SWEEP governance framework, which includes coordinators and executive committee members located at public universities. The focus will be on building innovation systems, entrepreneurial development mechanisms and practical support tools that respond directly to the challenges women face when starting or scaling businesses during their studies. Scope of the Intervention The consortium will be responsible for designing multidisciplinary and sector informed interventions that enhance entrepreneurship opportunities for female students. This will include Developing structures, tools and resources for innovation and entrepreneurial capacity building within SWEEP chapters Identifying and addressing key barriers that impede women students’ participation in entrepreneurship Integrating mentoring and training that draw on expertise from diverse academic fields and private sector partners Creating holistic support mechanisms that strengthen confidence, capability and access to opportunity for aspiring female entrepreneurs The initiative also presents an important opportunity for UK and South African partners to expand international engagement, share insights and cultivate joint strategies for women’s economic empowerment in higher education contexts. Eligibility Requirements To qualify, applications must meet the following criteria: The proposal must be jointly led by one South African higher education institution and one UK higher education institution The consortium must include a minimum of three and a maximum of seven additional partners based in South Africa and the UK, resulting in a total consortium size of five to nine organisations Supporting letters from both lead institutions must be included Lead institutions must demonstrate established expertise, experience and international engagement in supporting women’s entrepreneurship within higher education A pre existing relationship between the UK lead institution and at least one South African partner is preferred Key Grant Details Applicants should take note of the following: Deadline for applications: 10 December 2025 at 17.00 GMT Number of grants available: one Grant value: £60,000 Required size of consortium: minimum of five organisations, maximum of nine How to Apply Applicants must submit their proposals through the official online application system.
