Outstanding women researchers from around the world are invited to apply for the Newnham College Research Fellowship 2027, a prestigious three-year fellowship hosted by Newnham College, University of Cambridge. About the Fellowship The Newnham College Research Fellowship is intended for women scholars with outstanding academic potential who are at an early stage of their research careers. The fellowship provides recipients with the opportunity to pursue independent research at one of the world’s leading academic institutions while benefiting from Cambridge’s vibrant intellectual environment. Research Fellows are expected to conduct research of the highest quality in their chosen field and produce work suitable for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals or equivalent scholarly outlets. Although fellows have the freedom to pursue independent research agendas, many choose to collaborate with departments, faculties or research institutes affiliated with the University of Cambridge. Eligibility Requirements The competition is open to women from any country who have recently completed a doctorate or are nearing completion of their PhD studies. Applicants who have not yet formally received their doctoral degree may still apply, provided they have submitted their PhD thesis by 31 August 2026. Candidates submitting their thesis after this date will not be eligible for consideration. The fellowship particularly targets researchers who: • Have recently completed a PhD• Have recently submitted a doctoral thesis• Possess only a few years of full-time postdoctoral research experience• Demonstrate exceptional academic promise and leadership potential• Aspire to pursue careers at internationally recognised institutions The College notes that candidates who have taken career breaks for professional or family reasons will not be disadvantaged during the selection process. Fellowship Benefits The fellowship offers substantial financial and professional support designed to help recipients establish themselves as leading scholars. The stipend is currently set at £38,784 per year based on the University of Cambridge salary scale for 2025–2026, with annual progression through a three-point scale. Updated salary figures may be subject to future pay awards. Research and Teaching Opportunities The fellowship’s primary focus is research. Fellows are expected to dedicate most of their time to advancing their research programmes and producing high-quality scholarly outputs. However, fellows are encouraged to undertake a limited amount of additional academic activity, including: • Individual or group supervisions for Cambridge students• Mentoring postgraduate students• Admissions interviewing• Student support and pastoral activities These responsibilities are remunerated separately and should not exceed six hours per week during Cambridge Full Term. Any university teaching undertaken outside the College must be negotiated independently with the relevant University department. Application Requirements Applications must be submitted online by 23:59 UK time on Thursday, 3 September 2026. Applicants are required to submit: • A completed online application form• A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)• A research statement of no more than 1,000 words• Contact details for two academic referees The research statement should outline: • Research achievements supporting the application• Proposed research plans during the fellowship• Confirmation of any necessary arrangements with a Cambridge department, faculty or research institute The selection panel places considerable importance on the clarity, organisation and accessibility of the research statement. Applicants are encouraged to avoid excessive technical language and write for a broad scientific audience. Reference Requirements Two references are mandatory. Referees must submit their letters by 10 September 2026. References should specifically address the candidate’s suitability for a fellowship equivalent to a junior faculty position. Applications lacking two completed references will not be considered. Selection Process Following an initial review, selected candidates will be invited to submit three examples of written scholarly work. Preference is given to: • Published journal articles• Accepted peer-reviewed publications• Conference proceedings• Relevant sections of doctoral theses Shortlisted candidates are expected to be interviewed during the week beginning 11 January 2027. Interviews may be conducted virtually via Zoom.
