Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming journalism, media, and information management worldwide. About the NPR AI Research, Ethics and Readiness Internship The internship will run from October 5, 2026, to April 16, 2027, and is hosted jointly by NPR’s AI Labs and Research, Archives & Data Strategy (RAD) teams. Participants will collaborate with technologists, product managers, researchers, archivists, and media professionals to explore how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly in journalism while maintaining editorial integrity and public trust. The program is divided into two phases: Phase 1: AI Labs (October 2026 – January 2027) During the first phase, interns will work on innovative AI-powered solutions that help journalists access and utilize NPR’s extensive archival content. They will support the development of tools that transform unstructured historical media into searchable and discoverable assets. Phase 2: Research, Archives & Data Strategy (January – April 2027) In the second phase, interns will focus on developing ethical frameworks and standards for AI applications involving archival content. They will contribute to research initiatives that combine machine learning technologies with human editorial oversight. Key Responsibilities Successful candidates will gain practical experience in: Building AI-powered prototypes for newsroom applications Developing workflows for searchable digital archives Analyzing historical media collections for reporting opportunities Evaluating AI systems for accuracy, bias, and ethical compliance Preparing datasets for machine learning and generative AI research Supporting metadata management and archival preservation efforts Creating documentation and standards for responsible AI use The internship offers exposure to real-world challenges facing modern news organizations as they integrate emerging technologies into journalistic workflows. Who Should Apply? NPR is seeking applicants with an interest in artificial intelligence, journalism, archives, data science, or digital media innovation. Ideal candidates may have experience or academic backgrounds in: Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning Natural Language Processing (NLP) Data Science Information Science Digital Humanities Journalism Computer Science Library and Archive Studies Applicants should demonstrate strong analytical abilities, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a remote and collaborative environment. Familiarity with tools such as GitHub, machine learning frameworks, metadata systems, and AI technologies will be considered an advantage. Eligibility Requirements To qualify, applicants must be: Current students enrolled in an accredited degree program, or Recent graduates who completed their studies within 12 months of the internship start date. Applicants must also be legally eligible to work in the United States throughout the internship period.
