The Data Coordinator for East and Southern Africa is a key position within the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), responsible for monitoring, analysing and maintaining high-quality data on internal displacement across the region. Based in Nairobi, the role applies IDMC’s established methodologies, strengthens regional partnerships and contributes to evidence-based analysis on displacement linked to conflict, violence and disasters. The position is open exclusively to Kenyan nationals or individuals with existing legal authorisation to work in Kenya. Key Responsibilities The Data Coordinator ensures accurate and timely tracking of internal displacement trends. Duties include: Monitoring and analysing displacement caused by conflict, violence and disasters across East and Southern Africa. Uploading verified data into IDMC’s global database in strict compliance with organisational standards on frequency, accuracy and consistency. Contributing to analytical outputs that identify emerging trends, drivers and impacts of displacement in the region. Supporting the technical refinement of IDMC monitoring tools, including methodology updates and data quality improvements. Maintaining and expanding a regional network of partners, including government agencies, NGOs, research bodies and humanitarian actors. Strengthening partners’ capacities in data collection, information management and displacement analysis. Providing technical support to cross-regional and organisational initiatives when required. These responsibilities collectively ensure that IDMC continues to provide authoritative, multi-sourced and verified information that informs global and regional decision-making. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate brings strong analytical capabilities, attention to detail and an ability to manage complex datasets. IDMC seeks a professional with the following background: 3–5 years of experience in: Research and data collection Quantitative data analysis Database management and information systems Understanding of the East and Southern Africa context, particularly related to conflict or disaster-induced displacement. Experience working with large datasets, including reviewing, processing and uploading substantial volumes of information. Ability to produce clear, concise analytical products based on diverse data sources. Additional qualifications include: Master’s degree in: International affairs Social sciences Displacement, migration, humanitarian or development studies Information science or statistics Or other relevant disciplines Strong organisational and information-curation skills, including desk reviews and literature analysis. Experience building and managing institutional partnerships, across both governmental and technical sectors. Collaborative working style, with the ability to operate effectively in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team. Strong communication abilities, including report writing and presentations. Capacity to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines under pressure. Understanding of normative and operational frameworks related to displacement, humanitarian response and disaster risk. Technical proficiency, including: Word and Excel Online research tools Databases and information management systems Knowledge of Python, R or other statistical software (an asset) Language skills: Fluency in English (required) Portuguese or Swahili (an asset) Employment Details This position is offered under NRC Kenya’s national employment framework.
