The One Mara Carbon Project (OMCP) Mara Carbon CLG is seeking a Communications Officer to join its landscape-scale carbon initiative based in Aitong, Maasai Mara, Kenya. This full-time position offers an opportunity to support one of Africa’s leading nature-based carbon projects while contributing to climate action, biodiversity conservation and community development. The successful candidate will lead communications, storytelling and stakeholder engagement across the project, working closely with conservancies, local communities, government agencies, donors and conservation partners. About the One Mara Carbon Project The One Mara Carbon Project (OMCP) is a large-scale landscape initiative operating within the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. The project promotes sustainable rangeland management, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and improved livelihoods for pastoralist communities. Working alongside community conservancies, landowners and county governments, OMCP implements regenerative grazing practices that strengthen ecosystem resilience while generating high-integrity carbon credits under internationally recognized carbon standards. The project combines climate finance with community-led conservation to support long-term environmental sustainability and inclusive economic development across the Maasai Mara landscape. About the Communications Officer Role The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing OMCP’s communication and visibility strategy while ensuring that the project’s achievements, community stories and environmental impact are effectively communicated to diverse audiences. Reporting to the Carbon Manager, the successful candidate will produce high-quality multimedia content, manage digital platforms and translate technical climate and carbon information into accessible, engaging communication products. The position is offered on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and project funding. Key Responsibilities The Communications Officer will lead the development of communication materials including newsletters, brochures, factsheets, presentations, success stories, press releases and social media content. The role also involves documenting community experiences, field activities, conservation achievements and project impacts through professional photography, videography and written storytelling. Additional responsibilities include: Managing and regularly updating the OMCP website and social media platforms. Producing compelling human-interest stories highlighting benefits to communities and conservancies. Supporting stakeholder communication with conservancy managers, community representatives, donors and government agencies. Coordinating media engagement and responding to information requests. Ensuring consistent project branding across publications and events. Preparing communication materials for workshops, meetings and community forums. Translating technical carbon and climate information into accessible public content. Maintaining a well-organized digital archive of photographs, videos and publications. Supporting documentation for project monitoring, reporting and carbon verification processes. Promoting OMCP achievements through local, national and international media platforms. Ensuring communication activities respect community rights, informed consent and cultural sensitivities. Eligibility Requirements Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Communication, Media Studies, Marketing or a closely related discipline. Candidates must have at least three years of relevant professional experience in communications, media, public relations or development projects. Essential skills include: Excellent writing, editing and storytelling abilities in English. Experience developing communication strategies and visibility materials. Strong social media and digital communication skills. Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement abilities. Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams. Willingness to travel regularly throughout the Maasai Mara landscape. Experience in photography, videography and basic graphic design is considered highly desirable.
