Open Philanthropy is expanding its Global Catastrophic Risks (GCR) division to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges — from biosecurity and pandemic preparedness to transformative artificial intelligence (AI). The organization seeks up to four senior generalists to strengthen leadership capacity, drive strategic projects, and enhance global impact across its fast-growing portfolio. About the Global Catastrophic Risks Division The GCR division is responsible for reducing the likelihood and impact of large-scale global threats. It encompasses programs in Navigating Transformative AI, Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness, GCR Capacity Building, and Forecasting, alongside other special initiatives. With more than $500 million in grants projected for 2025, Open Philanthropy anticipates continued growth in both scale and complexity. To meet these evolving demands, the organization is hiring talented leaders with strong strategic thinking, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills. These roles offer a rare opportunity to shape global responses to long-term, high-stakes risks. The Four Key Roles Chief of Staff, Global Catastrophic Risks Working directly with senior leaders Emily Oehlsen and George Rosenfeld, this role supports overall strategy, coordination, and leadership across the GCR division. The Chief of Staff will help set strategic direction, enhance team alignment, and identify new opportunities for expansion. The position offers close collaboration with senior executives and a platform for leadership growth. Chief of Staff, Technical AI Safety Reporting to Peter Favaloro, this position supports the Technical AI Safety (TAIS) program, which funds research to mitigate catastrophic risks from advanced AI systems. The role focuses on scaling a rapidly growing team, streamlining operations, and driving cross-functional initiatives. While technical expertise is not required, familiarity with AI safety or research management is advantageous. The successful candidate will help shape systems, strategies, and talent pipelines to maximize the program’s global influence. Chief of Staff, Short Timelines Special Projects This newly established role supports Claire Zabel in leading initiatives designed for scenarios where transformative AI develops faster than expected.
